Sentencing for Brandon Anderson of Pattonsburg has been set for 9 a.m. March 21 in the Daviess County Circuit Court. On Jan. 16, Anderson plead guilty to second degree murder and kidnaping for his participation in the Aug. 3, 2004, murder of Steven Lawrence Jr. near Pattonsburg. Judge Warren McElwain will be the presiding judge.
Anderson had originally been charged with first degree murder. By agreeing to plead guilty to the lesser charge, Anderson could face imprisonment of from 10 to 30 years or life imprisonment on the murder charge and from five to 15 years on the kidnaping charge. Another defendant in the crime, Kevin Harmon of Pattonsburg, has been sentenced to life without parole. A Clinton County jury convicted Harmon of first degree murder on Feb. 22, 2006, returning the verdict in only three hours.

Circuit Court
During Law Day on Feb. 20, a change of venue to Livingston County was granted to Elbert Fry of Gallatin, charged with two counts of child molestation first degree. The case has been assigned to Judge James Valbracht, Associate Circuit Judge of Livingston County. John Young of Mercer County has been appointed as special prosecutor.
Additional Law Day proceedings will be reported in next week’s issue.
Criminal cases filed: State vs. Deanna L. Roedel, Pattonsburg, three counts of endangering the welfare of a child in ritual/ceremony, second degree, class D felonies; State vs. Karl M. Robbins, Earth City, two counts child molestation first degree, class B felony; State vs. Douglas P. Smith, one count child molestation first degree, class C felony; State vs. Jamie L. Scott, Coffey, possession of controlled substance, class C felony.
Civil cases filed: Robert S. Fredricks, Pattonsburg, vs. Amanda Jean Fredricks, Coffey, for dissolution of marriage; Randy and Joyce Eads, Altamont, vs. Earl Gregory Brown, Kim Brown, and Brown Lumber Company LLC for breach of contract.

After returning from an executive session of their regular meeting held Monday, Feb. 12, the Daviess County R-3 Board of Education offered the following contracts: half time (not to exceed 550 hours) to Wendell Burns as high school counselor, $18,850; half time (not to exceed 550 hours) to Chris Gannon as a science teacher and curriculum director, $18,850; 11 month to Kristi Weldon as high school principal, $50,000;10 month to Becky Morris as elementary principal, $45,000.

Citizens for Missouri’s Children has announced some good and bad news for Daviess County youngsters in their release of the 2006 Kids Count Data Book. The data book is an annual publication produced by private and public organizations across the state to inform citizens about the needs of Missouri’s children.
