According to court documents, hydromorphone pill packages were carefully cut and the pills were replaced with over the counter allergy pills. Over 30 hydromorphone pills were found to be missing.

Derwinis, 27, has now been charged with several additional crimes. On Oct. 13-14, she was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance, stealing controlled substance, forgery, harassment first degree, abuse of elderly person, and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

As reported in last week’s edition, Derwinis was arrested after a traffic stop by Daviess County Deputy Dalton Youtsey on Oct. 11 and was charged with stealing controlled substance, possession of controlled substance, speeding, failure to stop at stop sign and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. Derwinis was stopped on West Grand Street in Gallatin after Deputy Youtsey received a report of a reckless driver. During a consent search, Derwinis was found to be in possession of Lorazepam which belonged to a patient at the nursing home, where Derwinis was employed as a licensed practical nurse.

Derwinis is also accused of harassment for using Facebook to threaten a Daviess County resident through private messaging. The sheriff’s office received a report from the person who received the threats on Oct. 13. In the messages, Derwinis offered to pay the victim for “keeping her mouth shut.” Multiple messages indicated that Derwinis would hurt the victim. One message said, “I’ll murder you.” The victim requested a protection order against Derwinis.

Derwinis had only been released from the Daviess-DeKalb County Regional Jail (DDCRJ) on the first group of charges a couple of hours before she began threatening the victim. Derwinis was arrested at the Daviess County Courthouse for harassment first degree and was transported to DDCRJ.

Daviess County Nursing and Rehab also discovered several spoons with a white substance on them in the cabinet under the sink in the staff restroom. These spoons appeared to be identical to items found in Derwinis’ purse during the initial traffic stop on Oct. 11.

After Derwinis was arrested for harassment, during transport to DDCRJ, Derwinis admitted tampering with hydromorphone pills which belonged to an elderly patient. She also admitted that she used the spoons to shoot up with hydromorphone in the staff restroom and that she is addicted to drugs.

Derwinis began working at the nursing home on Sept. 23, until her arrest on Oct. 11. It is believed she stole controlled substances from multiple elderly people, replacing pain medications with over-the-counter allergy pills.

Derwinis was arraigned Oct. 15, and bond was denied. A bond hearing was set for Oct. 20.
