The Daviess County Health Department has reported its first COVID-19 related death. The resident was a 93-year-old male who tested positive for COVID-19 on Sept. 9.
All close contacts have been notified, according to the health department. If you have not been notified, you are not a close contact. If the health department has tried to reach you, please cal them back. If you think you been around this person, stop traveling; this is the only way to stop the spread along with precautions listed by the health department.
Daviess County has been one of the highest, and briefly the highest, county in the state for “seven-day percent increase”.
This statistic is reported on the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Dashboard. This week, Daviess County had an increase of 26%. The county went from 53 cases seven days ago to 74 current cases, 51 active and 23 closed. That’s 21 more cases in a week.
However, the numbers can be misleading, says Cheryl Alexander, Administrator at the health department, “Because Daviess County has such a low number of cases, the increase in recent cases looks like a lot.”
The increase in numbers is caused by a combination of factors.
“The increase is because of school starting, a lot of prison cases, people getting out more and just not social distancing — social distancing is the issue,” Alexander says.
