We sometimes forget that America is not and never has been a democracy. Pure democracy is dangerous, because it is majority rule. It has been said that democracy is two wolves and one sheep deciding what to have for dinner! America’s founders have given us a democratic republic, which is representative democracy, an ingenious system wherein the rights of each individual are protected. However, it falls upon “we the people” to maintain that inspired form of government, and to remember its true foundational principles.
For example, freedom can only exist with morality. The phrase, “immoral free men” is a contradiction in terms. Unless we have sufficient character and morality, we will not be able to govern ourselves.
When morality declines, the abuse of rights increases, necessitating more government. Just as criminals need jailers and livestock are herded, an immoral society requires a police state. We have been seeing the tragedy of immorality without police take a tragic toll on cities that have defunded the police. Likewise, if we ever abandon our morality as a people, we will lose our freedom. Thankfully, the opposite is also true — that raising our own moral character will help to preserve freedom. It has always been that way.
