Season Pass by Dennis Cox
The second first round matchup in the GHS Women’s Hoops Madness tournament saw the 2013-14 team take down the squad from 1992-93. Team members of the winning squad included Kailey Elbert, Kaitlyn Hefley, Sara Lin, Kailey Salmon, Bailey Maxwell, Madison Rounkles, Tristyn Siegel, Kylie Jeffers, Morgan Acree, Aubrey Burns, Michaela Lynn, Taylor Swalley, Taylor Rardon, Tatum Griffin, Taylor Sloan and Sami Boyd.
The next first round “contest” is an interesting matchup of the 1983-84 team against the team from 2008-09.
The 1983-84 squad, under head coach J.R. Collins, finished 24-4 and champions of the GRC (first time ever for the girls), Polo and Gilman City Tournaments. A victory over defending champion Stanberry in the final league game wrapped up a perfect 8-0 GRC run. Sally Spillman and Lori Beck were unanimous all-conference and they currently rank third and fourth, respectively, for Lady Bulldog single season points totals. Julie Wood and Dawn Tuttle were honorable mention GRC that season.
Additional team members from 83-84 were Teanah Bradley, Libby Pitzenberger, Kim Pickering, Dana McLaughlin, Lori Bonderer, Tina Deppen, Dawn Axon, Kristie McLaughlin, Melanie McLaughlin, Staci Schaffer and Jacqueline Thompson.
The 2008-09 team finished 21-7, 7-2 in the GRC. A signature game came early in the season when the Lady Bulldogs upset defending Class 2 state champion Hamilton in the final of the Gallatin Tournament, ending the Lady Hornets’ 34-game win streak. The 08-09 team would lose twice to Hamilton (including the district final), twice to South Harrison and once to Chillicothe that season.
Courtney Ray, owner of the Lady Bulldog single game scoring mark of 37 points, was first team all-conference. Wren Tolen made second team and Ashley Owens and Tye Humphrey were honorable mention in 08-09. Also on that squad were Maggie Strange, Kelly Critten, Alex Burge, Carly Boyd, Jamie Brinnen, Ashley Beck, Savannah Butcher, Alex Richards, Becca Mott, Ashley Burns and Tory Wood.
Online votes will be tabulated up to 5 p.m. next Tuesday and results will appear online in the next bracket offering and in the North Missourian.
Anonymous Comment: “Lots of speed and ball handling ability in this matchup. The 2013-14 team had many established players while the 1992-93 team had some that were just coming into their own.”
