Summer 2020: The unknown frontier. These are the challenges of the starship Daviess County Library. Its three-month mission: to explore strange new social distancing, to seek out new methods for established programs, to create new programs to meet new needs, and to boldly go where no man has gone before.
The Daviess County Library is exploring new ground this summer and stretching its imagination and skill set in planning for the remote and virtual elements for the summer reading program.
Children began reading and logging minutes read May 19 and continue to log reading—ANY READING—through Aug. 15. An online log is available on the website under “What’s Happening” or “Kid Zone—Summer Reading Program”. Additionally, logs will be distributed with loans from both libraries. For more details visit www.daviesscountylibrary.org, follow our Facebook page, and watch for posters at the libraries.
Due to the many adjustments since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, programs like B-I-N-G-O, Rocket Boosters, Rocket Club, Tweens, and Storytime normally presented at the library during June and possibly July will now be offered virtually through Facebook Live sessions, recorded sessions available on Facebook and YouTube, and some Zoom meetings.
A “Dragon-tale”-gate element of the program will begin Tuesday, June 2, with lunch meals delivered to all five towns in the county one day each week. The library will provide free meals to children during the summer. Volunteers are needed throughout the summer to help serve meals, supervise children, and do outreach in the community. Contact the library at 660-663-3222 for more information about volunteering or donating to the Summer Meal Program.
Each year the U.S. Department of Agriculture partners with local organizations like Daviess County Library to provide free meals to children when school is out for the summer. Anyone age 18 or younger may come and eat. Staff and volunteers will prepare the simple meals at central locations and the SRP2Go van will deliver meals to a location in each town. The locations and schedule will be released closer to the start date. Volunteers are invited to help at all levels of the program, preparation to delivery. Don’t be shy!
Library staff are missing the kids, but are excited to engage them in these fresh, new ways. For more information, call the library 660-663-3222 or visit the website at www.daviesscountylibrary.org, then find the Kids’ Zone/Summer Reading Program.
