Dear Editor:
Our courthouse has been open for business for about 110 years and during that time has been witness to some momentous, and sometimes scary, events, including: World War I, the Great Depression, Pearl Harbor, World War II, the Korean War, McCarthyism, the Cold War, the Vietnam War, the Oklahoma City bombing, the first Iraq War, the 9/11 bombing, the second Iraq War, and the war in Afghanistan.
With one or two temporary exceptions, public access to the courthouse has been free and easy throughout all these events. Now, in a period of relative calm, courthouse access has been restricted and full-time security has been implemented with a checkpoint, uniformed guard, appointments, etc. A system that seems to have more in common with some despotic and corrupt country in Eastern Europe rather than Daviess County, Missouri, USA.
The stated reason for the new system is security. I believe that it has nothing to do with security and everything to do with a make-work situation for an overstaffed sheriff department. A situation that will benefit the few at the expense and inconvenience of the many. Someone has sold a bill of goods and, in this case, the goods reek.
