Margaret Meseberg of Jameson recently wrote to reminisce on childhood memories, including oil well speculation in the area. Researching our archive, this account (which would have taken place before Margaret was born) was published in the March 20, 1919, edition of The North Missourian:
Flooded oil well machinery
“Several oil men are in Gallatin this week, looking after the interest of J.K.D. Shaffer, who is planning to drill on the A.J. Tingler farm, between here and Jameson.
“Practically all the machinery has arrived and been put in place. E.E. Hook, manager, is here from Wichita, KS, and J.H. Bagnall of Kansas City.
“The high waters which flooded the community in the vicinity of the well was about five feet over the machinery from Sunday until Tuesday morning but had run down enough yesterday for the workers to get in on derrick floor. The present situation looks like they will be ready to begin drilling by Saturday.
“Other members of the party are: Jas. Homan, foreman of the drillers, Peabody, KS; Harry Rosenthal, contractor, Wichita, KS; Frank Carroll, driller, Augusta, KS; Mrs. Carroll and little son, Frank, Jr., are also here and stopping at the Hotel Woodruff.”
