On Jan. 16, 2020 Missouri Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Acting State Conservationist, Grover DePriest, signed a Record of Decision (ROD) supporting the installation of a multi-purpose reservoir in Caldwell County. This decision fulfills National Environmental Policy Act requirements to assess the environmental impacts of this federal action and was based on the development of a comprehensive Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement. The preferred alternative, which includes the construction of a 344-acre reservoir, will avoid environmental impacts to the extent possible while minimizing and mitigating for impacts that are unavoidable.
Once required permits are obtained, construction on the reservoir will begin. Upon completion, the Little Otter Creek Reservoir will supply water, reduce flood damage, and provide public recreation.
“We continue to work closely with the Caldwell County Commissioners to move this project forward. As project sponsors, they have worked diligently toward finding a solution to the lack of drinking water supply in the region,” said DePriest.
The Reservoir will be located two miles southeast of Hamilton and is designed to provide 1.24 million gallons of water per day to nearly 10,000 people in Caldwell County. Planning efforts began in 2000 through the provisions of Public Law 83-566. As the lead federal agency, the NRCS has provided both financial and technical assistance to support the efficacy of the project.
