“We are definitely living in unprecedented times,” says Dr. Bryan Copple, Gallatin R-5 Superintendent. “Flexibility and understanding is important in this time of need.”
School administrators, health agencies and state officials have determined the best course of action to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus is to send students home.
Daviess County’s five schools have canceled classes, with the tentative date of April 6 for classes to resume.
But it will be no extended vacation for students. They can expect to receive assignments during their break through weekly updates from instructors. Those future assignments will come via the web, email, textcaster or social media.

Gallatin R-5
The Gallatin R-5 School District plans to continue the progress of learning through various ‘virtual’ classroom platforms. Students have been allowed to check out district Chromebooks to take home (grades 5-12). For students who do not have WiFi access at home, old-fashioned ‘hard-copy’ assignments will be arranged.
“Gallatin students took their ‘hard copy’ assignments home last night,” Dr. Copple said Tuesday. “Students will be in communication with teachers to provide the best education we possibly can due to the circumstances.”
“At Gallatin R-5 School District we understand the responsibility we have to provide a safe and secure learning environment,” wrote Copple in a message to the community on the school’s website. “We also want to keep communication lines open at all times, especially during this difficult time around the world.”
The coronavirus or COVID-19 is a rapidly evolving situation that seems to not only change by the day, but by the hour.
Gallatin R-5 doors will be closed until April 6, 2020, effective after school on March 16.
Those with questions or concerns should call the district at 660-663-2171.
Backpack Buddies, a supplemental food program for children on free and reduced lunch, will still be provided at Gallatin to the best of the school’s ability.

Winston R-6
Winston R-6 School was in session on Tuesday, March 17, to prepare students for extended learning, according to Superintendent Brian Robinson.
Beginning Wednesday, March 18, and through Sunday, April 5, the Winston R-6 School District will be closed, and there will be no activities in response to the nationwide effort to mitigate the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). School will resume on Monday, April 6, 2020.
“While I know that this cannot duplicate the daily classroom experience for our students, the remote learning processes will allow our students to continue to explore, discover, and learn,” Mr. Robinson noted in a letter to parents. “We may be closing our school buildings, but we will remain available to support our students through various means that will be relayed by teachers in the coming days.”
The Winston School District would like to provide free meals to students for as long as feasibly possible while the school is closed. In order to help facilitate this, the school is asking that families that would like this service contact the school by emailing Superintendent Brian Robinson at [email protected] or calling 660-339-6462 by noon on Thursday, March 19 and leaving a message including the name, grades of children and contact information so meals can be coordinated.
BackPack Buddies were distributed Tuesday for the coming weekend. If your family receives this service and did not receive this week’s BackPack Buddies, please contact the school at 660-339-6462.

Pattonsburg R-2
Pattonsburg will not be in session from Wednesday, March 18 through April 6, 2020, according to Superintendent Scott Ireland.
“With the school closure, comes activities cancelations and postponements,” wrote Ireland in a memo to the community. “Beginning March 17, all activities will be postponed. This includes the calendar forum and prom set for this week. I am very sorry for this, but it is unavoidable as we want to protect your students’ safety. We will set a new date for prom at the safest, earliest opportunity.”

Tri-County R-7
Tri-County R-7 at Jamesport is closed from March 17 until April 3.
“We will continue to evaluate the situation and hope to reopen on April 6,” wrote Superintendent David Probasco in a letter to the community.
Students were sent home with educational materials to work on during the closure. The school will provide updates on additional resources through the website and textcaster.
The R-7 District has developed a plan to feed students Monday through Friday, starting March 23. Families that live inside the city limits can pick up meals from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Please do not get out of your vehicle. Food service staff will bring the meal to your car window or hand it to students that walk to school. Pickup will be located outside the door to the kitchen on the west end of the elementary building. It will be the same location as the line for car riders. Families should call the school Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 noon at 660-684-6117 to place their order. The school will also deliver meals to families outside of town from 11 a.m. to 12:30. Parents should notify the staff it they will want breakfast and/or lunch, milk or juice, and if they are a pickup or a delivery.
“By working together and staying flexible we will get through these trying times,” Probasco said.

North Daviess R-3
Superintendent Dan Street notes that North Daviess R-3 will be in session Wednesday, March 18, all day. The school will be out from Thursday, March 19, until Friday, April 3. School will resume on Monday, April 6, unless advised otherwise. Students were asked to bring sturdy bags to school Wednesday so they could take home their books. Lessons and teacher instructions will be provided so students will still be able to complete work at home. If you have any questions please call the school at, 828-4123.
