Gallatin FBLA members, Brianna Filley, Cloey Waterbury, and Olivia Woody of the American Enterprise Team, recently met with Gallatin’s Searcy Elementary School second grade class to do a presentation on wants versus needs.
The FBLA “CAMP Team,” with the support and assistance of the second-grade teacher Mrs. Morrison and the Elementary School Principal Mrs. Thogmartin, led a second-grade class on an adventure through wants versus needs.
The camping fun started by reading a book around a campfire about wants and needs. Then the children were split into three stations. Each station stood for a letter in the slogan CAMP. C-Choices, A-And, M-Money, and P-Priorities.
The Choices station included a relay race with wants and needs. The students had to make the choice of what was a want and what was a need. The Money station included spending money wisely at a store where they sold wants and needs with play money.
The Priorities station had a fun camping worksheet that included students prioritizing what to bring on a camping trip. The team taught the students how to decide between wants and needs and how to spend their money wisely.
These children are the future spending generation, and it is important for them to make smart money decisions. Basic skills of knowing how to decipher between a want and a need and how to spend money were all developed and covered in interactive learning activities. Through pre-testing activities with the second graders, FBLA members constructed activities with the students to improve their CAMP skills.
The final step in CAMP was to administer a post-test on the definitions that were related to the wants versus needs lesson. Fifteen students successfully completed their CAMPing trip. Students were excited to learn how to spend their money wisely and are more prepared for choices in the future.
The American Enterprise Team, led by Gallatin FBLA Adviser Barbara Holcomb, will compete at the State Leadership Conference this April in Springfield.
