A new year is almost upon us. Every 12 months, we get the chance to pause, reflect, look back on the year past and set our sights on what we want to achieve in the upcoming year.
In addition, a new decade is about to begin. This is a great time to look back at what has happened in the past 10 years and think about our successes and areas where we might have come up short.
For me, getting into the month of January also means making the drive to Jefferson City to begin another legislative session. We had a productive session in 2019, but there are still so many mountains to climb.
Every day at the Capitol is spent with one goal at the forefront: How do we help our citizens? I want to make sure we continue to provide those essential services our most vulnerable population needs, at the same time, keeping costs low and using taxpayer dollars frugally.
Already, nearly 300 bills have been pre-filed for the 2020 legislative session. Most of my early legislation aims at improving services and ensuring sufficient funding continues to go to those providers.
Again this year, I will be chair of the Missouri Senate Appropriations Committee. This important panel is tasked with appropriating taxpayer resources, in order to create the state’s operating budget for the upcoming year.
While it is a lot of work, the budget is also the only constitutional requirement for lawmakers.
