Homecoming week was celebrated at Winston R-6 with dress up days every day and a volleyball tournament and pep assembly. Homecoming Royalty candidates are pictured at right.
The auditor’s report for fiscal year 2018-19 from Jeremy Clevenger, CPA, showing the district in full compliance with Missouri Accounting Standards and Practices, was accepted by the Winston School Board during their meeting on Dec. 16.
Superintendent Brian Robinson’s contract was extended one year to maintain the current three-year contract with the district.
Business teacher Linda Littrell announced her retirement at the end of the current school year and was approved for the district’s early separation agreement.
The school board candidate filing period for the April 7, 2020, election is Dec. 17, 2019 to Jan. 21, 2020. Candidates can file from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. after Dec. 17, 2019, and until Jan. 21, 2020, on regular school days. This year’s Winston R-6 School District board election will consist of three three-year terms.
The high school principal reported that FFA teacher Mrs. Martin is taking a couple of field trips with her classes. Ag Science 2 has visited a greenhouse in Cameron. A group is going to Triumph Foods in St. Joseph on Jan. 13. The Greenhand Motivational Conference is Jan. 8. Seniors will be going to Snow Creek in Weston on Jan. 9. Report cards will go home on Jan. 7. HDC Band Clinic will be at Winston on Jan. 11. Holiday Hoops at North Central Missouri College will be on Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 30 at 5:30 p.m. There is also a game on Jan. 3 at Pattonsburg. The Osborn Basketball Tournament is Jan. 13-17. First semester finals will be on Dec. 18-19.
The elementary principal reported December enrollment at 85, with average daily attendance at 95%.
Recent activity was launched to make sure students really know what the school-wide expectations are, after reviewing Positive Behavior Support (PBS) data and a student fidelity checklist.
Students in grades 3-6 will be going to the Nelson Atkins Art Museum for a field trip (Egyptian Art) that supports sixth grade social studies curriculum, and also supports Missouri learning standards about cultural diversity.
Quarterly benchmark assessments are being administered, MAP practice tests are being explored, and STAR reading screenings are being conducted.
November Students of the Month for the character trait of patience were: preschool, Heaven McCleary; kindergarten, Anthony Crossland; first grade, Brody Boaz; second grade, Madi Reynolds; third grade, Joel Hunter; fourth grade, Isabella Burger; fifth grade, Rosie Cameron; sixth grade, Micah Beaty.
Christmas classroom celebrations are being planned and staff is working on a district wide activity to promote collaboration and boost morale amongst teachers. Kickoff will be Monday with a small activity to take place each day and final games on Thursday. Special treats are planned for the teachers with a hot cocoa bar on Monday in both workrooms.
