Dogs take down Redbirds
As it turned out, Winston’s last 3-point bucket proved to be the Redbirds’ last challenge to top-seeded Gallatin in Saturday’s boys’ championship game of the Gallatin Invitational Tournament.
Marshall Farrell’s trey with 5:23 remaining in the fourth quarter tied the score at 33-33 but the Bulldogs surged to a 49-41 win for their first GIT title since 2014. The Redbirds, 4-time d efending champs, used 8 three-pointers to keep the game close until the Bulldogs were able to build a 2-possession lead late in the contest.
Winston never led in the contest but the Redbirds were able to knot the score twice in the first quarter, once in the third and a final time in the fourth.
Free throws and turnovers, or the lack of turnovers for Gallatin, played a pivotal role in the GHS victory. Winston forced only 8 GHS errors across 4 quarters and Gallatin was able to hit 14 of 19 free throws, including 6 of 8 in the final minute of play.
Tristen Gibson led Gallatin with 23 points and garnered the tournament’s MVP honor. Isaac Bird netted 12 points and was also named to the tourney’s all-star team of 6. Jakub Hisel led Winston with 19 points (3 treys). Farrell finished with 9 (3 treys) and Jacob Uthe added 7 (2 treys) for the Redbirds. Both Hisel and Uthe were named to the all-tournament team.

Braymer tops Trenton for title

Tournament MVP Jasmine Taylor notched 15 points to lead the Lady Bobcats in the title tilt. Teammate Kennedy Stone added 14. Maci Moore led Trenton with 12 points.

Polo teams take third
Both Polo girls’ and boys’ teams outplayed their seeding position. The #4 Lady Panthers defeated #2 Hardin-Central, 49-29, for third place after the Lady Bulldogs endured a 3-overtime loss to Braymer on Thursday night. Kelly Baldon led Polo with 19 points. Carly Thacker also scored 19 for the Lady Bulldogs.
The Panther boys, seeded at #5, knocked off #3 Trenton, 68-58, to take their share of third place. Joe Beaver scored 22 and Alex Pilger added 17 for Polo. Brycin Loyd led Trenton with 15 points.
