The Winston School Board set the school board candidate filing period for the April 7, 2020, election as Dec. 17, 2019, through Jan. 21, 2020. Candidates can file from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. after Dec. 17 and until Jan. 21, 2020, on regular school days.
This year’s election will consist of three three-year terms. The terms of current board members Shelly Mason, Karla Youtsey and Jason Estes are up for reelection.
In other business at the Nov. 18 school board meeting, Sophie Pliley was hired as the assistant girls basketball coach.
The Annual Secretary of the Board Report (ASBR) has been approved by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
The principal reported on winter sports. High school basketball has started. Girls have 14 total members with four freshmen playing. Junior high boys have 12 total members with three freshmen playing. Junior high boys record is 9-2; girls record is 4-7.
FFA Week went well. Mrs. Martin, advisor, worked very hard to have things run smoothly.
The Veterans Day assembly was Nov. 12, with Don Koonce as speaker. The band played and Kathryn Barnes sang.
Homecoming week is Dec. 16-20, and finals will be Dec. 18-19.
The elementary principal reported on classroom happenings. Students recognized for the October character trait of honesty/trust were Christopher Williams, kindergarten; Jase Korthanke, first grade; Gracie Youtsey, second grade; Reznor Hoffman, third grade; Enzo Filley, fourth grade; Isabel Robinson, fifth grade; and Kaiden Martin, sixth grade.
Student Ambassadors are helping with Backpack Buddies, putting up new bulletin boards, and recently served refreshments to veterans after the assembly. They will also be helping greet students at Winston in the mornings.
Mid terms grade reports were sent on Nov. 20.
Dental screenings were scheduled for Nov. 15 for preschool through sixth grade.
