I recently accompanied Lt. Gov. Mike Kehoe at the Cameron Missouri Veterans Home to celebrate World War II veteran Bill Pollard. Mr. Pollard, now a resident of the vet home, is from Princeton and stocked the vet home library with books on America’s wars, and gives lectures to school kids on what it was like to serve.
The duties of the lieutenant governor are not well known, so I thought I would outline them in this report. First, the lieutenant governor is an advocate for veterans. This includes visiting our state’s seven veterans’ nursing homes, and representing our vets when veterans’ issues arise. And it includes acknowledging the contributions made by our veterans, like Mr. Pollard.
The lieutenant governor is also the advocate for senior citizens and speaks on their behalf in matters concerning the elderly. This includes interfacing with the Veterans Administration and the Department of Health & Senior Services.
A newer duty of the lieutenant governor is championing the Buy Missouri program. Buy Missouri shines some attention on Missouri made products, and encourages shoppers to choose products from kitty litter to windows to dog food to BBQ grills that are made in Missouri. Buy Missouri is an initiative started by Gov. Mike Parson when he was lieutenant governor.
