The Gallatin Police Department has been working with the community for over a year to get an ordinance that will allow for the use of golf carts on city streets, according to Police Chief Mark Richards. On Aug. 28 a new law (SB67) will go into effect that will authorize municipalities to allow golf carts to be operated upon city streets.

Derrick Lin, an eighth grader at Gallatin Junior High School, is a runnerup for the 2008-09 MSHSAA Junior High Sportsmanship Essay Contest. Derrick and contest winner, Bridget Beck of Clarkton, will be recognized on the field at a St. Louis Cardinals baseball game this season and enjoy suite accommodations for the game with their families, courtesy of FSN Midwest and the MSHSAA.

July 21-28, 1999

Pattonsburg won first place in the Missouri Northwest Region of The Stock Market Game, it was announced by the Missouri Council on Economic Education. The Pattonsburg team consisted of John Holcomb, Lauren Hulet and Steve Mooney. Their advisor is Troy Clawson.

Gallatin R-5 members of Future Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), formerly known as Future Homemakers of America, returned from national competition in Boston, MA, with a silver and gold medal. This marks the first time in school history for Gallatin to compete at this national level. Gallatin participants were Lauren Henderson, Jamie Lunsford, Laura McCann, Amanda Bohannon, Roxanne Hostetler, Roxi Davitt, Kamille Burrell and Kayli Burrell.

July 19-26, 1989

Julie Bridgman won second place in keyboarding applications at the FBLA National Leadership Conference held July 4-7 at Orlando, FL. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Bridgman of Winston.

Leota and Bill Snyder are marking the 20th anniversary of Snyder True Value Hardware in Gallatin with an anniversary sale and open house all day on July 29. Bill purchased the Western Auto store in 1969 and immediately relocated the business from the southeast corner of the square to the present southwest corner. This lot once held the Daviess County Savings Association where Capt. John Sheets was murdered Dec. 7, 1869. The murder and robbery are attributed to Frank and Jesse James.

July 18-25, 1979

Jumping mules are the new attraction at this year’s edition of the North Missouri Steam & Gas Engine Antique Show in Hamilton. Some of the mules in the contest will jump as high as 15 to 20 inches above the tallest part of their backs.

By vote of coaches, Charles Parrish was named MVP following camp activities at the first annual NEMSU Camp at Kirksville. Johnny Cummings turned in a 4.7 time in the 40 yard dash, the best time clocked, on his way to being named the best linebacker at the camp.

July 17-24, 1969

A Gallatin Navy flyer, Commander Adelore Louis Alexander, has assumed command of Fighter Squadron 51 attached to the Carrier Bon Homme Richard, which is now in port at Sasebo, Japan. Alexander is the son of Mrs. A.R. Alexander and the brother of Frank Alexander, both of Gallatin.

Two Pattonsburg youths, Miss Kathy Munn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Munn, and Danny Day, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Day, all of Pattonsburg, are studying in Europe this summer. Kathy is studying at the University of Grenoble in France. Danny will do his studies at the University of Aix-Marseille, France.

One of Gallatin’s largest private construction projects in several years is underway in north Gallatin where workmen are pouring footing and foundation for the new Lynch Super Market. The opening is tentatively set for early fall, according to owner Jack Lynch.

July 16-23, 1959

Major remodeling has taken place at the McDonald Tea Room. Mrs. (Virginia) McDonald’s decorating ideas were carried out by Jack West, Winston, and Stub Graham. They have worked for about seven months. The main dining room is now called the Crystal Room and features an unobstructed view of the patio, plus a new Italian marble fireplace. A new colonial staircase leads from the Crystal Room to the Garden Room.

Daviess County school buses traveled 358,560 miles during the past school term to transport rural and city pupils to classes. This is equivalent to 16 times around the world.

The Teenage Music Makers, a group of Jamesport youngsters, will provide fun and entertainment during the Grand River Fox Hunt program to be held at Dockery Park. Members of the group are Joyce Wiles, Mary Wiles, Michael Downey, Carol Trimble and Mary Brown.

July 21-28, 1949

A record-breaking load of beef cattle was trucked last Saturday night from the Graham Williams farm, three miles north of Jameson, to Trenton, where it was entrained for Chicago. The 45 head of Hereford white-faces averaged about 1,700 to 1,800 pounds and the biggest seller tipped the scales at 2,100.

The board of education moved this week to provide Gallatin High School a new football stadium by purchasing a site just west of the present school property from Otto Long. Consideration for the 3.13 acre tract was $600. Coinciding with the purchase, Raymond Miller, owner of the new apartment development on highway 6 west, donated to the school a 172 x 143 foot tract fronting on the highway.
