Breanne Brammer, daughter of Kim and Dennis Brammer, was recently announced as the winner for the Show-Me Institute’s high school division of the Policy Plus Essay Contest. Breanne’s persuasive essay on changing to a four-day school week won for the month of May. She will be receiving as check for $1,250.
Construction is ongoing on land owned by Phil Morrell located about four miles northwest of Gallatin off Highway M. Mr. Morrell of Salt Lake City purchased 300 acres with the original intent of building a horse training camp.

Kelly Squires, daughter of Peggy and Elvin Noel of Gallatin and a 1982 graduate of Gallatin High School, captured the American Tae Kwan Do Association World Championship last Friday during competition held at the Statehouse Convention Center of the Excelsior Hotel in Little Rock, Ark. Her world title came in the women’s second degree black belt competition.
Brock Griffin of Jameson has qualified for the Missouri High School Rodeo Finals to be held at Ozark from June 17-19. Brock qualified for state finals in four events, boys cutting, boys calf roping, steer wrestling and team roping. He is the son of Bob and Marlene Griffin of Jameson.

Volunteers assisting the Winston Historical Society sprayed a final coat of paint on the old Rock Island Train depot, evidence of continued progress of the historic structure’s renovation. Saturday’s painting crew included Scott Eaton, Bill Michael, Terry Caldwell, Jim Caldwell, Bud Young and Russell Uthe. Spray equipment was provided by Bill Lewis.
Your next chance to see 21-year-old Gallatin native Craig Cummings is June 29 at Madison Square Garden in New York. Wilfredo Camacho of the Bronx will be Craig’s first professional boxing opponent. Cummings was the Kansas City Golden Gloves champ in the 147-pound open division in 1987, 1988 and 1989. He has been boxing since age five.

Some 200 to 300 people in Altamont are suffering through a water shortage as a result of a rupture in the well casing in the best of Altamont’s two city wells. For over a week Altamont has been purchasing from 6,000 to 7,000 gallons of water each day from Winston’s system as citizens seek some alternative for a permanent water supply.
Larry Holley, a 1963 graduate of Jameson High School and son of Mrs. Lawrence Holley, will be the new head basketball coach at William Jewell College effective next month. Holley, a 1967 graduate of William Jewell, has spent the past four years as assistant, then head coach, at Northwest Missouri State University.

The casualty list from Vietnam this week produced heartache and sadness again in this community when Mr. and Mrs. Roy Worrell received word Tuesday that their son, David, was killed in action on Saturday. He would have been 20 years old next month. David told his parents in a letter that he was in the 101st Airborne Division artillery unit on a hill from which he could look out upon “Hamburger Hill,” in the news lately as the scene of intense fighting.
For single women interested in meeting single men, object matrimony, Daviess County is the place. According to the latest estimates there are some 145 unmarried men locally for every 100 unmarried women.
The long awaited opening of the seven-mile stretch of Interstate 35 southwest of Winston to south of Civil Bend will take place at 10 a.m. this morning. Altamont junction, which has always been a busy spot as a result of Highway 69 traffic, will probably become less of a motoring hub. Opening of the new section will also mean a new entrance to Lake Viking.

Miss Barbara Everman arrived at 8 a.m. Monday to become the first dental patient of Dr. Ted C. Riegelman. Dr. Riegelman’s office, eight rooms in all, is located in the Long building south of the post office.
Last night’s band concert, the second of the season, brought a large crowd to the City Hall lawn for the 8 o’clock program. Music director Gene Holt announced that there are eight concerts scheduled for the summer program.
Thursday through Saturday at the Courter Theatre in Gallatin, a teen-age motorcycle gang clashes with some hot plane pilots in “The Hot Angel.” Sunday through Monday, James Stewart and Kim Novak star in “Vertigo.”

A jury in the magistrate court of Judge O.O. Mettle deliberated almost four hours yesterday without reaching a decision in the case of State of Missouri vs. Amos M. (Bud) Carter, charged with fishing without a license and refusing to permit examination of game. The State alleges that Carter was hand fishing June 12 at Koger’s Bend on Grand River southwest of Pattonsburg.
Mrs. Mildred Harlow of Gallatin, an employee of the Brown Café, was this week’s $25 winner in the Chamber of Commerce cash giveaway. The three $5 prizes went to Mrs. Betty Moulin, Gallatin, Mrs. Hazel Delmore of Jamesport; and Harry Miller, Jameson.
Mrs. Edna Garrison, 67, who gained fame in 1909 by remaining at her post as telephone operator at Pattonsburg during the record Grand River flood, died Tuesday at the home of her sister and brother, Miss Olive Bell and Henry Bell, in the Civil Bend community. Mrs. Garrison heroically kept the switchboard open while flood waters filled the first floor of the telephone building. She stuck to her post 24 hours and succeeded in summoning rescue workers to aid flooded residents of Pattonsburg.
