The Gallatin Chapter DAR is proud to announce the 2019 Good Citizens representing the 2019 graduating classes of all five county schools.
Recipients were Tanna Marcedies Courter, daughter of Jeramy Courter and Megan Williams of Jamesport; Ally Jo Johnson, daughter of Randy and Karen Johnson of Gallatin; Shaila Mariah Cramer, daughter of Brandon and Tiffany Heath of Pattonsburg; Robyn Briann Sprague, daughter of April Sprague and Jason Sprague of Jameson; and Darryen Elizabeth Ragan, daughter of Sarah and Jay Ragan of Winston.
All five students entered the essay contest this year, with Tanna Courter’s essay progressing to the next level of competition.
The Gallatin Chapter DAR usually hosts a Presidents’ Day Tea in February at which all Good Citizens are recognized, however, due to the inclement weather this past February, the tea was cancelled and chapter representatives made the award presentations at various times, including regular school days, senior awards nights and graduations.
The DAR Good Citizens program is a way to recognize outstanding young people who exhibit the qualities of good citizenship in their homes, schools, and communities.
The DAR good citizens program and scholarship contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship.
The program is open to all high school seniors enrolled in public or private schools accredited by their state board of education. United States citizenship is not required.
The student selected as the school’s DAR Good Citizen must have the following qualities: Dependability (truthfulness, honesty, punctuality); Service (Cooperation, helpfulness, responsibility); Leadership (personality, self-control, initiative); Patriotism (unselfish loyalty to American ideals)
The recommended procedure for selecting a DAR Good Citizen is for the faculty to choose three seniors who have demonstrated, in an outstanding way, these qualities of a good citizen. From these three students, the senior class selects one student.
Each school may, however, use a method of its own choice. Each school may honor only one senior class student per year as its DAR Good Citizen. Each school’s DAR Good Citizen receives a DAR Good Citizens pin, certificate, and wallet recognitions card. This student is then eligible if he/she wishes to enter the DAR Good Citizen Scholarship Contest.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890 to promote patriotism, preserve American history, and support better education for our nation’s children. Its members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War.
