The North Harrison Shamrocks parlayed 3 big offensive outbursts into a 10-7 upset victory over Pattonsburg in last Wednesday’s Class 1, District 15 championship held at Pattonsburg High School.
North Harrison, the #2 district seed, opened the game with 3 singles and a double, scoring 4 times before recording an out. The Shamrocks cashed in 5 more runs in the sixth inning with a lead-off home run by Darin Huitt and a grand slam by Brett Emig.
The Panthers closed the gap to 4-2 in the bottom of the first when Cameron Jones laced a drive down the left field line for a one-out double. Logan Pankau rocketed a drive off the top of the right-center field fence that scored Jones. Cooper Teel delivered the third consecutive double with a smash past third base to score Pankau.
Jones fouled off a couple of breaking balls in the bottom of the third before crushing a fast ball over the fence to cut the Panther deficit to 4-3.
With the Shamrocks leading, 10-3 into the bottom of the seventh inning, Pattonsburg bats came alive for one last push. Patrick Cowley reached first after being hit by a Huitt pitch. Jones reached on a 2-out error. Pankau singled to score Cowley. Teel drove a liner that caromed off the glove of the center fielder’s glove, scoring both Jones and Pankau. Dillon Turner doubled to right field to drive in the game’s final run.
The contest ended with the game-tying run in the on-deck circle for the Panthers, whose season ended at 10-4.
