Believe it or not, “A Universe of Stories in STEAM,” Daviess County Library’s summer reading program, kicks off with the first SRP2Go in Pattonsburg at the park from 1-2 p.m. on May 22. SRP2Go is bringing summer reading to your little corner of the universe with books to lend, TumbleBooks Storytime, a take-home craft and even an internet hotspot to download e-books for the week. SRP2Go stands for Summer Reading Program to Go and STEAM stands for science and fiction; careers in technology, engineering and design, art and our world, and Math Moonwalk Week.
SRP2Go is scheduled for Wednesdays:
11 a.m. to noon, North Daviess at the park, beginning May 29
1-2 p.m., Pattonsburg at the park, beginning May 22
3-5 p.m., Winston Pop-Up next to the post office, beginning May 29
Jamesport Branch library will enjoy its own SRP2Go on Fridays beginning May 31, with B-I-N-G-O at 9 a.m. followed by MU Extension’s Cosmic Cooking class at 9:30. The library will not be open to the public, only SRP2Go will operate out of the library van in the lawn next to the library.
Regular programs are planned at the main branch in Gallatin, for Tuesdays, 10-11 a.m.: B-I-N-G-O (ages 6+) and Rocket Boosters (toddler – K storytime); Thursdays, 10-11:30 a.m.: Cosmic Cooking (ages 6-8) and Rocket Club (ages 9+); and the big coup de grace, July 16-20 with MOONWALK WEEK, celebrating the 50th anniversary of our first moon landing. Watch for special dates for after-hours movies throughout the summer, too.
All children are invited and welcome to participate in programs, but only children with library cards (free to county students) will earn reading rewards. Children participating in the program will be asked to read 15 minutes per day and will be rewarded all summer long when reaching reading milestones like five hours, seven hours and, finally, completion at 10 hours. All county schools cheer them again when returning to school in August with their own reading rewards — ask your teacher about book report credits. (School rewards differ according to district and grade.) Reading zealots are invited to complete the program twice to earn a seat on the library’s Chautauqua Parade float.
Bring the kids. Spread the word. All summer reading events and times are posted on the website calendar at www.daviesscountylibrary.org/calendar. For more information bring the kids to the library, get their library card and pick up a calendar of events.
