Although there has been historic and catastrophic flooding across parts of the Mississippi and Missouri River Basins, the Grand River at Gallatin and Pattonsburg hasn’t reached flood stage. At least not at this time. Rain chances increase over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
According to David Roll, Emergency Management Director for Daviess County, the NWS Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service reports the Grand River in Pattonsburg March 19 was 5.89 feet. Flood stage is 25 feet. The Grand River at Gallatin March 19 measured 8.33 feet. Flood Stage is 26 feet.
As most people realize, Mr. Roll notes, the ground is already pretty saturated and is not going to dry up anytime soon. Last summer we faced extreme drought conditions and this winter has been both colder and more wet than we have had in the last few years. Hopefully some of that snow will have soaked into the soil despite the deep, frozen ground we have had this winter.
