Stan Ray is retiring from the Gallatin Post Office after 31 years of service as a rural carrier. Stan started as a substitute carrier in February of 1983 and began full-time in 1990. His last day is Thursday, Feb. 28.
Stan served under three postmasters, Clayton Grimes, Geneva Johnson, and now Carl Wiles. He has seen many changes. One of the first was going from wooden sorting cases to metal cases with movable separations. The metal cases are much more worker-friendly. Another big change was Delivery Point Sequence (DPS) mail, which meant the letters were pre-sorted. Today’s scanners can scan anything with a bar code, which has led to an increase in packages, which can also be attributed to increased usage on the internet.
Stan says he plans to do things that he enjoys during his retirement, including traveling and spending time with his granddaughter, Ellie, who will be four next month.
Stan and his wife Denise have three children. Whitney is married to Micah Sidebottom, and they are the parents of Ellie. Courtney Ray is a teacher at Gallatin. Micah Ray is employed at Act II popcorn plant in Hamburg, IA, where he also serves as a volunteer fireman with the Hamburg Fire Department.
