After missing the last 6 games with a knee injury, senior Kelsey Maxwell returned to the Gallatin lineup in a big way, scoring 20 points while shooting 61% in the paint and grabbing 11 rebounds to lead the Lady Bulldogs to a 61-42 GRC victory over Milan on Tuesday.
Gallatin trailed after the opening quarter, 15-11, but sprinted to a 27-21 advantage at the break. A 20-7 third quarter surge effectively put the game out of reach for the Lady Wildcats, who absorbed their first loss in GRC East Division play. Due to cancellations, Milan has 3 East Division games remaining, which will delay pairings for the upcoming interdivisional showcase at South Harrison.
A bucket by Caragan Baker early in the third period gave the Lady Bulldogs their first lead since the opening shot of the game. From there, the Lady Bulldogs went on a 10-2 run capped by a Karley Salmon trey and baskets by Maxwell and Madalyn Shubert.
Gallatin, which improved to 4-3 in the GRC and 11-7 overall, led by as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Wildcats were able to close to 55-41 with under 2 minutes to play. Salmon and Baker combined to hit 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch.
Defensively, Gallatin held Milan to 18 points under their per-game scoring average.
Salmon finished the game with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Baker tallied 14 points.
Milan boy 78, Gallatin 42
Milan’s boys picked up their 17th straight win Tuesday night with a second half surge that carried them to a 78-42 victory against the Bulldogs, who entered the contest in second place in GRC East standings.
The Bulldogs pulled to within 3 points of the lead with 2:15 remaining in the first half but the Wildcats surged to a 36-24 advantage before Landon Corwin banked in a 3-pointer for Gallatin at the buzzer.
The Wildcats caught fire in the third period, going on a 22-5 run late in the quarter to take a 60-38 lead into the final 8 minutes.
Johnny Stout came off the bench to lead the Bulldogs with 13 points. Landon Corwin chipped in 8 for Gallatin, which fell to 4-3 in the GRC and 9-8 overall.
Ryan Dabney led the Cats with 27 points and surpassed the 1,000 point career mark during the fourth quarter.

Gallatin teams travel to Albany on Friday and return home to face King City on Tuesday. Gallatin will also head to Hamilton next Wednesday to take on the Hornets in a double header added to the schedule.
