The Humane Society of Missouri Animal Cruelty Task Force rescued 16 severely malnourished horses from a 16-acre property in northwestern Harrison County in northern Missouri. The horses range in age from foals to 12 years old. The horses were in paddocks and pastures barren of all vegetation and have had no on-site veterinary care.
Contacted by the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office, an HSMO animal cruelty investigator visited the property and found 11 deceased horses in various stages of decay and 16 others in serious jeopardy of starvation. Live horses were found in the same enclosures as dead ones. The owner admitted she could no longer properly care for so many horses. She agreed to voluntarily surrender the 16 horses in the worst condition to the Humane Society of Missouri. The owner also has agreed to secure food and proper veterinary care within the next week for three additional horses remaining on the property.
The rescued horses are being transported to Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union, MO, for what will be a lengthy rehabilitation before they can be made available for adoption.
