The Daviess County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) recently purchased two Hazmat IQ Kits and placed one with the Kidder-Altamont-Winston (KAW) Fire Protection District and one with the Pattonsburg Fire Protection District. The two kits together cost $4,994.38.

KAW and Pattonsburg were chosen after a flow study conducted in 2016 indicated Interstate 35 as the area’s highest risk for a potential hazardous material incident.

Members from several districts in Daviess County attended and completed a Hazmat IQ course. The course was made available and paid for by the Missouri Emergency Response Commission using Tier II funds.

The course provided a series of easy-to-understand job aids called smart charts. The charts enable responders to handle an incident, based primarily on chemical names and associated chemical properties.

After the course was completed, the Daviess County LEPC voted to purchase the two Hazmat IQ Kits.

The standard SAFe Kit includes: pH 1-14 Test Paper Roll; Fluoride Test Paper 200 Strips

Potassium Iodide Starch Paper 200 Strips; RAE Systems DoseRAE Pro PRM-1300; Four Gas Calibration Mix, 34L; Constant Flow Regulator with Tubing; RAE Systems QRAE 3 Diffusion LEL/H2S/CO/O2 Li-ion, Non-Wireless; SKB Case 18x13x7 with custom foam and in-case charging; Fluke 568 IR Thermometer; HazmatIQ Charts. The SAFe kit can be customized to fit the mission.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed by a representative of each fire protection district, the Daviess County LEPC Chairman, and Daviess County Presiding Commissioner during a meeting of LEPC held Nov. 7 at Subway in Gallatin.
