Vicky Ray of Gallatin won $50,000 on Oct. 27, by playing the Christmas Bingo scratch off game at Casey’s in Gallatin. Vicky made a trip to the Independence Center Lottery office where they double checked her ticket and gave her some papers to fill out. They called Friday to say the check was in.

Gallatin has the very rare privilege of being able to claim two veterans from Pearl Harbor, Jesse Reynolds and John (Jub) Tomlinson. A Diamond Jubilee Award citation was presented to the VFW Post 2172 on Tuesday when the Post celebrated its 75th anniversary.

Gallatin Bulldogs awarded All-Grand River Conference football honors this week are Kale Hefley, Derrick Sprague, Colton Selby, Jacob Gienapp, Derrick Teel and Alex Critten.

Nov. 11, 1998

Gallatin has taken another step closer to hiring a city administrator. During Monday night’s regular meeting of aldermen, the board accepted a draft of an advertisement announcing the position of Gallatin City Administrator.

Ty Uthe, 10-month-old son of Jerald and Kelley Uthe, Winston, won first place in a Kansas City costume contest sponsored by City Market on Oct. 31 in the 0-2 year age group. Ty also won first place in other contests held in Chillicothe, Cameron, Lathrop and Turney, and he took third place in East Hills Shopping Center’s Cutest Kid in Costume contest.

Nov. 9, 1988

Daviess County went Republican in yesterday’s presidential election, though the local vote count was the closest of any election outcome in the past five presidential elections. Only 22 votes separated the Bush/Quayle ticket from Dukakis/Bentsen.

A county bridge spanning Big Creek is under construction north of Pattonsburg. The bridge, when finished, will be 75 feet long with a 35-foot approach, easily the largest bridge built by the Daviess County bridge crew.

Nov. 16, 1978

The publishing of the Jerry Litton autobiography, with profits to go to the Litton Foundation, has been announced by Charley and Mildred Litton. Author of the book is Bonnie Mitchell, a native of Chillicothe who was a classmate of Jerry’s in high school.

Varsity athletes representing the Coffey High School Wolves during the 1978-79 basketball season are Angela Lamma, Kelly Hartzler, Carla Burkhead, Bonnie Creasey, Cindy Carter, Rebecca Everly, Tina Gallihar, Larry Brown, Norman O’Hare, Carl Holcomb, Greg Merrigan, Boyd Hathaway, Eddie Brown, Randy Griffin and Billie Ferguson.

Nov. 14, 1968

As if Saturday morning’s earthquake tremors weren’t enough, Sunday produced about four inches of wet snow on Daviess County, six weeks before the official start of winter. Saturday’s earthquake came at 11:05 a.m. and was reported to have shaken a 22-state area. The point over which the shock occurred was estimated as 120 miles east of St. Louis.

Staff Sgt. Donnie Uthe received the Bronze Star Medal with “V” device for heroism while serving as a squad leader in the central highlands of Vietnam. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Uthe of Winston.

Nov. 13, 1958

Gallatin’s flashy halfback, Jim Houghton, was the only Bulldog to make the Grand River Conference all-star first team. Steve Tate, hard-driving fullback, received honorable mention. Hamilton placed end Bill Guffy, tackle Wayne Baker and halfback Ron Gastineau.

The Democrats gained control of the Daviess County court for the first time in nearly ten years yesterday when Sheriff Leland Houghton, complying with the law covering the situation, broke a tie between Republican Grover Hoyle and Democrat Roy Gibbens which resulted from the counting of absentees.

Nov. 11, 1948

Daviess County Polio drive workers have been named by county chairman Walter Metzgar. The sub-chairmen who will help put over the annual Infantile Paralysis campaign in January are Mrs. Mary Edna Cruzen, R.B. Wade and Dr. E.E. Nixon.

The death of Mrs. Everett Watson, 33-year-old Pattonsburg farm wife, is the third fatality in the county in the past month resulting from an attack by farm animals. Mrs. Watson was killed Saturday by an enraged bull. Leonard J. McClung, 80, also of the Pattonsburg community, was fatally injured by a ram which butted him to death as he was trapped in a stall. Isaac W. Haines, 82, Gilman City, died in a Trenton hospital of injuries suffered when he was attacked by a bull at his farm.
