Coming into Friday’s first round district game against Princeton, Gallatin Head Coach Patrick Treece was concerned about the possible effectiveness of the Tiger passing game. After all, the Tigers aired the ball 67 times one week earlier in a narrow loss to South Harrison.
As it turned out, Treece and the Bulldogs had nothing to fear.
Gallatin defenders intercepted six passes and a punishing, downhill Bulldog running game overwhelmed their visitors to the tune of a 59-30 decision. The Bulldogs rushed for a season-high 445 yards and their top four runners, Graydee Rains (206), Aidan Adkison (144), Ross Critten (50) and Haden Bradford (45) combined to average over 8 yards per carry.
Gallatin’s offense ripped Princeton for over 500 yards last Friday night. Getting ready to run a successful play are quarterback Aidan Adkison, flanked by running backs Graydee Rains and Haden Bradford, along with center Tom Crouse and left guard Morgan McBroom.
Bulldog punter Tristen Gibson punted three times for a 35 yard average.
Princeton quarterback Austin Kelly threw 39 times, completing 22 passes for 291 yards and a single TD. Cam Jones rushed for 108 yards on 15 carries.
Gallatin’s dominance wasn’t immediately evident. Critten scored early on a 45-yard reverse but Princeton answered with a quarterback keeper and two-point conversion set up by a 32-yard pass completion. The Tigers went up, 14-7, when they caught the Bulldogs napping on a quarterback draw that accounted for a 35-yard score.
Gallatin bounced back with three quick scores, two of which were set up by interceptions by Rains and Bradford. Adkison scored twice and Rains garnered his first TD to give the Bulldogs a 28-14 cushion early in the second period. Adkison’s second TD was set up by a screen pass and long run by Critten.
Both teams continued to pound away at the scoreboard in the second quarter. Princeton narrowed the gap with a passing TD and two-point conversion but Gallatin answered with a pair of scores from Rains.
Adkison’s third TD of the night effectively put the game out of reach early in the third quarter, especially after an unusual sequence of events that followed. Adkison intercepted a Tiger pass in the end zone, but Princeton recovered a fumble on the next offensive play. Not to be outdone, Drayton Harris picked off a pass in the end zone on the very next play.
The Tigers couldn’t afford those quick turnovers that gave the Bulldogs opportunities to milk the clock. Princeton scored its final TD late in the third quarter following the first punt of the game by Tristen Gibson.
Rains reached the end zone for the third time early in the fourth quarter and following an interception by Adkison, Adrian Hernandez added a 39-yard field goal to his perfect night of 8-for-8 extra point kicks.
Next up #3 Marceline
With last week’s victory, the Bulldogs earned a trip to Marceline, where they will take on the 9-1 and #3 state ranked Tigers for the right to play either Milan or Hamilton in the Class 1, District 8 championship game.
The Tigers enter the game on a 6-game winning streak after suffering a 14-9 loss to #2 ranked Fayette in week four. Fayette’s lone loss of the season was to #5 Westran, which also lost to Marceline, 14-12.
The Tigers bring a balanced offense into play, led by 6’1”, 170-pound senior quarterback Chase Billups, who has thrown for 1,298 yards and 18 touchdowns. Five receivers have at least 150 yards in catches. All five have scored at least three TDs.
Leading the ground attack for the Tigers is Cullen Bruner, a 5’10”, 150-pound junior. He has rushed for 739 yards on 132 carries and scored nine times. Clayton Stallo, a 5’6”, 150-pound senior, has 10 rushing touchdowns and 484 yards.
Gallatin will counter with a predominantly running game, led by senior fullback Graydee Rains, who has rushed for 995 yards and 16 touchdowns. Senior all-purpose back Aidan Adkison has run for 752 yards and nine scores. Senior halfback Haden Bradford accounts for 625 yards and nine TDs.
Defensively, the Tigers are allowing an average of 8.7 points per game. The Bulldogs have given up an average of 11.5 points per contest.
