Last February’s winter weather put traditional celebrations on hold. To beat the winter woes members hosted events last week. On Tuesday members challenged students and staff within the district to a canned food drive. Anyone bringing in two canned food items or two non-perishable food items could wear a hat during the school day; the event was extremely successful with over 200 canned items being donated.
On Wednesday, FFA Officers took the sixth grade class to tour Shatto Dairy. This tour helped educate young people about the origins of their dairy products and gave them hands-on experiences with dairy cattle. FFA members also wore their flannel shirts that day.
Thursday was the Teacher Appreciation Breakfast. Officers got up early to cook for teachers and staff within the R-5 District; FFA members also wore their chapter shirts.
Friday was an educational day for students throughout the district whenever FFA members hosted Barnyard Day, Food for America, Farm Safety, and Conservation Talks. FFA members brought in pigs, cattle, herding dog puppies, and other farm animals. Terry Implement provided a tractor for the tractor safety portion of the tour; chainsaw safety was also presented. Alan Bradford from the Missouri Department of Conservation talked to students about firearm safety. The farm display was set up and students could see a variety of production agriculture settings. Food for America educated students about the origins of food products found on a typical sub sandwich and about dairy food production. Students and faculty from the district and from the community attended the event and FFA members were excited to tell the story of agriculture.
