Fall is here. It may mean football and pumpkin spice flavors for some, but for people with Medicare it also means open enrollment. Open enrollment begins Oct. 15 and ends Dec. 7. During this time, people with Medicare can change their Prescription Drug (Part D) Plan or Medicare Advantage plan. Changes will be effective Jan. 1.
Although change is not always fun, it is a good idea to at least explore your options for next year. You want to make sure your current coverage is still the best place for next year. Where to start? Check your mail.
Starting in October, insurance companies are required to send you an Annual Notice of Change/Evidence of Coverage form. Although it might look intimidating, it is a good idea to check it over for changes to co-pays and out-of-pocket costs. Also check your mailbox for your Medicare & You Handbook. They will usually be mailed in late September but if you haven’t received one, you can call 1-800-Medicare to get a copy.
For the first time since 2013, the Humana Walmart Rx Plan is not the least expensive Part D premium in the state. For 2019, there are actually seven plans with lower monthly premiums with the lowest at $15 monthly. Missouri has six new plans for 2019 and four plans that have discontinued.

Enrollment events will be available at the Jamesport City Hall from 9 a.m.-12 noon on Monday, Oct. 29, and Tuesday, Nov. 20. Enrollment events are also available at the Pattonsburg Multi-Purpose Center from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Thursday, Oct. 25, and Thursday, Nov. 29.
No matter how busy you are watching the fall colors, take a little time to check your Medicare options. It can make a huge impact in your pocketbook and your mental health!
