Becky Jo Morris of Coffey received her education specialist: superintendent degree at the conclusion of the 2008 summer sessions at Northwest Missouri State University.

Gallatin’s Lady Bulldog softball team knocked off rival Hamilton last Thursday to force a showdown with King City for the Grand River Conference title on Tuesday, but the unbeaten Lady Wildkats had other ideas about sharing the 2008 crown. King City batted around with nine runs in the fifth inning to cap a 16-2 victory over Gallatin.

Sydney Elbert shot a round of 51 last Thursday to earn the medalist award at a tri-meet held at Daviess County Country Club.

Sept. 30, 1998

Place’s Discount Center commemorated its 15th year anniversary with a special customer appreciation day on Sept. 26. In celebration of the anniversary, Place’s made a $250 contribution to the Lake Viking Kids Kamp and a $250 donation to the Gallatin Fire Department.

A retired Missouri Supreme Court Judge and graduate of Gallatin R-5 High School died Monday night following a three-car accident on Highway 179 on the west side of Jefferson City. June Morgan, 81, collapsed a short time after the accident occurred about 7 p.m. He died on arrival at a Jefferson City hospital.

Gallatin notched its 16th straight regular season win by defeating Rock Port, 13-7, and retaining a share of the GRC standings lead. The Bulldogs didn’t put a lock on the win until Matt Adkison picked off a Jared Meyerkorth pass with 55 seconds remaining.

Oct. 5, 1988

Shonna Terry and Sean Parker reigned as queen and king of Gallatin R-5 Homecoming festivities. Other involved in the weekend ceremonies were Cliff Agenstein, high school principal in 1963; today’s principal Mike Burrell; student body president Janice Wynne Marshall, 1963; and today’s Sean Parker; Marching Band Drum Majorettes Jan Gibbens Johnson, 1963; and today’s Heather Wright; Band President Cheryl Frazier, 1963; and today’s Stacy Berry.

Three 1988 Gallatin High School graduates are active at the University of Missouri-Columbia as members of Marching Mizzou. They are Darren Hiley, Larissa Pendleton and Kim McCarty.

Oct. 4, 1978

Darryl Wilkinson, who for the past two years has served as managing editor of the Grant City Times-Tribune, is this week joining the staff of Gallatin Publishing Company, where he will become editor of the North Missourian. Mr. Wilkinson is married, and his wife Liz is no stranger to a small town weekly newspaper office, having done advertising layup and assorted chores for her husband at Grant City.

The first annual Daviess-Caldwell Porkfest will be held Oct. 14 at the American Legion Park in Hamilton. Country western comedian Jerry Clower will climax the day’s events by crowning the queen in addition to his regular performance.

Virginia and Frank McDonald were surprised by relatives and friends at the McDonald Tea Room, Sept. 17, in observance of their 40th anniversary.

Oct. 3, 1968

George Alden has been selected Daviess County’s “outstanding young farmer’ by the Gallatin Jaycees. George, his wife, Janice, and their three children, own and operate a 335-acre farm located south of Gallatin. He rents an additional 450 acres and helps farm his father’s 265 acres.

This year is the first time Missouri high schools will compete for football state championships and the four classes have been arranged from A to AAAA according to enrollment. GRC school enrollments are: Albany, 211; Grant City, 197; King City, 167; Princeton, 217; Stanberry, 196; Gallatin, 195; and Hamilton, 198.

Oct. 2, 1958

Two Springfield men narrowly escaped injury Tuesday when their truck containing dynamite blew a tire and overturned south of Gallatin on Highway 13.

Robertson and Company, a long established Moberly firm, is seeking a 12-acre hillside tract near Gallatin on which to set up a mill for the manufacture of barrel headings. The mill will employ about 30 men, mostly skilled labor imported from other areas to make the tops and bottoms for barrels.

Donald G. Gregory, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lowell E. Gregory of Route 2, Jameson, has been promoted to Navy Lieutenant. Lt. Gregory is serving as a flight instructor at the Chase Field Naval Air Station, Beeville, Texas.

Sept. 30, 1948

Winners of the Daviess County plow terracing contest held last Friday at the Ollus Place farm west of Gallatin are Edward Hiley, Jefferson Township, first place; Oliver Miller, Cameron, second place; Ira Harris, Jamesport, third place; and Jack Cox, Gallatin, fourth place.

Miss Jo Ann Struhar, 5-foot, 3-inch Gallatin redhead, was judged the winner of the Fall Harvest Week beauty pageant for Daviess County and thus becomes Gallatin’s candidate in the American Royal beauty contest at Kansas City. Miss Norma Bartlett and Miss Wilma Lou Witten were second and third, respectively.

Tommy Houghton, young son of Mr. and Mrs. Leland Houghton, proved the best greased pig catcher Tuesday afternoon in the Fall Harvest Week contest held at the city hall lot. He won the $5 first place cash award.
