Bonnie Yates, librarian at North Daviess School, is always looking for a way to get more books for the school library. Ginger Snap of Osborn, and a member of MASL, Missouri Association of School Libraries, was aware of the limited budget that most small rural schools have in the library program. She contacted Ms. Yates over the summer and wanted to know if she and North Daviess School would be interested in the donated books, from the St. Louis School system. The books were “weeded;” which entails books that are five to eight years old and discarded from the school’s library.
At MASL Spring conference it was investigated and an approval was made to donate versus destroying the books. Ms. Yates said that Mrs. Snap had substituted at the North Daviess School and knew that the school library was one with a limited budget and books. Ms. Yates said that she immediately told Ginger that she and the school would be more than willing to accept books.
The harvest of books came this summer, in the amount of over 200 middle and high school reading level books. The books are a great addition for students to access at North Daviess for reading and research. A total of 10 small school districts benefitted this summer from the book donation. Kelly Hightree, principal, went on to state that she felt very blessed that MASL chose the North Daviess school, to better enhance the education of the students.
