The City of Gallatin watched 626,000 gallons of water go down the drain Saturday morning. The problem was caused by a water line break inside the clearwell located at the water plant east of town. A diving crew was summoned since no one could tell exactly how the pipe was broken. Divers discovered that the pipe had completely separated.
Addey Gann, co-captain of the Gallatin Pride Band Flag Corp, attended the Marching Auxiliaries Camp at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville. She returned home with a grand championship trophy, Rising Star award and many ribbons.

Voters in three townships in Daviess County were to have helped decide the fate of a tax increase for Noel T. Ambulance District on Aug. 4, but somehow no ballots were provided. Apparently ambulance district authorities failed to notify election officials in Daviess County and the error was unknown until calls were made for election day totals.
Two juveniles, ages 13 and 15, who had been missing since Monday from South Central Juvenile Care Center in Indianola, Iowa, were apprehended in Daviess County at the Texaco Truck Stop at I-35 on Aug. 11. There was a car chase involving the Highway Patrol and the juveniles, where at times they were going in excess of 100 miles per hour.

Circuit Judge Melvin E. Griffin has announced his decision to retire from the bench. He is Circuit Judge of Division II of the 43rd Judicial Circuit, consisting of Caldwell, Clinton, Daviess, DeKalb and Livingston counties.
Members of the Northwest Missouri Honda national runnerup softball team are Greg Lawson, Chad Courtney, Chris McBroom, Rodney Weller, Kobey Puls, Jason Smith, Dean Swalley, Kirk McCarty, Mike Lawson, Shane Skinner, Chad Weller and Bill Thompson. Mike Lawson, Pattonsburg, received the Outstanding Tournament Pitcher award for his efforts in leading his team in the more than 30 innings he pitched before suffering a tournament-ending hip injury.

Tammy Hamilton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Hamilton, was one of two young ladies selected as press hostesses for the trip of President Jimmy Carter to Columbia, where he addressed the annual convention of the Midcontinent Farmers Association. Tammy was selected by White House Press Secretary Jody Powell.
Ground was broken Monday for a 50 x 80 foot structure that will be the site of the Sears Catalog Store, operated by Carl Abbs. Wood Brothers are currently designing the building, which Abbs hopes to occupy by Nov. 1. [As of 2018, this is currently the location of Mi Mexico Mexican Restaurant.]

The Lake Viking dam resembled a battle field this week, with men and machines swarming all over the huge embankment. The final few feet of the dam’s height is being put in place and work on the spillway and outlet tower is taking place.
Mr. and Mrs. Syd Weybrew are newcomers to the Gallatin community, where Mr. Weybrew will be associated with C. Dudley Brandom in the offices of Brandom and Brandom.
Gallatin’s Extension Club softball team will play here Saturday night in a benefit game. Mrs. Evelyn Morrissey will manage and coach the team of Hazel Woody, Judy Tate, Patty Elbert, Charlotte Critten, Donna Richards, Ruth Frost, Karen Walker, Jean Hamilton, Rodonna Collier, Ann Schweizer and Verna Cole.

Caldwell, Larry Newsom, D. Wright and R. Woody. Coaches are J. D. Albrecht, Olin Wright and Glenn Sullenger. Dale Russell is the manager.
Dewey Combs, new football coach at Gallatin High School, announced that football equipment will be issued all day tomorrow and the first practice for the Bulldogs is slated for 2:30 p.m. Tonight a film will be shown to team members and their parents which shows two recent Missouri-Oklahoma football games. Both teams use the split T formation and that is the system Combs will use here.
The annual Daviess County Skilled Tractor Operators’ Contest held last Monday at the Gallatin Sale Barn was won by Bruce Lowrey of the Loyal 4-H Club. Max Summers, from the same club, was second. Bruce will represent Daviess County at the state fair.

If a certain economy expert at West Point who predicted in the 1920s with remarkable accuracy that a U.S. embroilment with Japan would occur, Russia and the U.S. will be at war about 1955. The same man who predicted trouble with Japan about 1940 says the same economic conditions would lead to war with Russia by 1955.
The folks who would have this county return to township organization should keep in mind that each township would have to start from scratch on road machinery, etc., at an expense running into the thousands.
Spencer Bridgeman of the Winston Red Birds 4-H Club, led all contestants with a score of 467 in the 1948 annual 4-H livestock judging contest held at the Clinton Osborn and Roy Tolbert farms last Wednesday.
