On July 25, the Daviess County Democratic Committee hosted a meeting at the Lions Club in Gallatin that drew people from Daviess, Harrison and Grundy counties to meet and talk with candidate Terry Richard (Missouri Senate District 12) and the three candidates for Missouri’s 6th Congressional District, Winston Apple, Henry Martin and Dr. Ed Andres.

The Gallatin area is mostly comprised of agricultural endeavors, with the public sector (i.e. city government and school district) being its major employers. With more than 25% of its population being over the age of 60, health care was a major topic.

Terry Richard was asked about the COOL (Country of Origin Labeling) that is no longer implemented by the USDA for beef and pork, with the questioner noting that he believed there was a lost market for locally produced food. Richard noted that the consumer also was affected by not being able to differentiate from USA and imported products. Richard also spoke about the need to protect Missouri’s farmland from being acquired by foreign countries, as those protections had been removed in 2013.

Mary Beth Pittsenbarger gave a presentation for helping the youth voters in Missouri with a Get Out the Vote (GOTV) program.

The Primary Election date is Aug. 7, with polls opening at 6 a.m. and closing at 7 p.m.
