Ed Howard advised the Daviess-DeKalb Regional Jail Board that they may receive phone calls in regard to a newspaper article written about the May board meeting in the Gallatin North Missourian. The headline of the article, “Jail will begin soliciting for inmates,” caused some confusion. Mr. Howard said he had already received several phone calls from people asking if it meant the jail solicited as in “requesting,” or if it meant the jail solicited as in “pimping” for inmates.

Mr. Howard wanted the board members to be aware. The board will review the minutes prior to them being submitted to the paper.

In other business at the meeting held June 29, Deputy Director Tim Carder reported the supervisors recently attended training on “dealing with difficult people.”

The grated steps on the new vans were posing a tripping hazard for detainees. Bob Barker came to the facility and modified the steps to rectify this safety issue.

Mr. Carder also noted that in July, the Missouri Sheriffs Association will be hosting a basic training class at the jail’s training facility, and will provide 40 hours of training to new hires.

Mr. Howard reported that the five transport vehicles are now equipped with audio/video recording.

Due to the retirement of Presiding Commissioner Randy Sims, David Cox will assume his duties on the board until a new Daviess County commissioner is appointed.

Clinton County has inquired about housing detainees at the facility.

Mr. Howard clarified with the sheriffs that extraditions were detainees coming from out of state.

Mr. Carder gave the financial report which was approved by the board. Sales tax revenue for May 2018, $105,127.90; Commissary grossed $8,901.95 for June 2018; CD Account 247 balance $243,744.92; CD account 977 balance $101,697.13; Sales Tax Account balance is $159,870.32; Operating Account balance is $54,354.45; Accounts Receivable $273,581.70; Accounts Payable $16,622.55; Payroll Account balance is $1,787.90.

Closed session was held to consider leasing, purchase or sale of real estate, and to consider the hiring, firing, disciplining or promoting of particular employees.

The next board meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, July 27.

Present were Daviess County Sheriff Ben Becerra; David Cox, Daviess County Commissioner; DeKalb County Sheriff Andy Clark; Ed Howard, Director; Timothy Carder, Deputy Director; and Lori Burke, Administrative Assistant.
