Editor’s note: Questions about the ways and means to remove those appointed to the board of the Daviess County Library remain unanswered. The library’s bylaws, first enacted in 1948 with amendments, provide no course of action. The following application clarifies what is expected from those who volunteer to serve on the board. Appointments are made by the Daviess County Commission.

DAVIESS COUNTY LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES APPLICATION

Interested in becoming a Library Trustee?

Members of the Board of Trustees of Daviess County Library are appointed for four-year terms. There are five trustees. Meetings of the Board of Trustees are held on the fourth Thursday of each month (except November and December) at 4 p.m. in the Conference Room of the Library. Attendance at the monthly meeting is mandatory as the duties of the Trustees include:

  1. Setting library policies.
  2. Providing the funding to carry out the library’s policies.
  3. Initiating tax and bond elections.
  4. Approving and periodically reviewing the annual budget.
  5. Hiring and evaluating the Director of the library.
  6. Acting as advocates for the library.

Individuals who are considering service on the Board of Trustees must be able to attend the monthly meetings and should expect to give a minimum of three hours per month to the duties of Trustee. Some committee work is required. There are no other special qualifications for the position of Trustee although people who are active patrons of the library and are committed to the principles of public libraries are most likely to find the position interesting, challenging and of great value to the community.
