The Knee-Hi 4-H Club and Gallatin Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution hosted a “Liberty Tree Dedication” honoring the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War in April of last year. All who served in the Vietnam War — in theater and around the world — were recognized at the event. This April DAR members Markay Gallager, Beth Plotner, Gina Dixon and Mary Beth Pittsenbarger, along with several from the Gallatin VFW Post 2172, secured the plaque at the site of the Liberty Tree. The 4-H club continues to care for the tree, which is a graft off of the original. Special thanks went to Missouri 4-H Foundation, Crader Distributing and STIHL dealerships who sponsored the Liberty Tree. The original Liberty Tree was a famous elm tree that stood near Boston Common during the Revolutionary era. In 1765, the Sons of Liberty, a group of American colonists, staged the first act of defiance against British rule under the tree. This spawned the resistance that eventually led to the American Revolutionary War. 4-H members continue to care for the tree at the park.
