Chief Master Sergeant Roger A. Woody will speak at the annual Memorial Day ceremony at Lile Cemetery located in Gallatin. Roger is the Superintendent of Enlisted Affairs, assigned to the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense, Personnel and Readiness, Pentagon, Washington, D. C. Roger is a 1981 graduate of Gallatin R-5 High School and son of Hazel and “Burr” Woody.

Gallatin R-5 students had their art selected for display at the North Central Missouri Art Show held at the Doris Rider Gallery on the campus in Trenton. They are Carly Boyd, Casey Sweatman, Kelsey McLaughlin, Alex Burge, Alex Critten, Stephen Wood, Franki Bass, Tarah Gutzmer, Shalyn Lollar, Erica Freestone, Connemara Higgins, Hannah Huffman and Janel Holcomb.

May 20, 1998

Amy Woodruff, daughter of Frank and Kay Woodruff, was named Valedictorian of the Gallatin R-5 High School Class of 1998. Sarah Hemry, daughter of Warren Hemry and Joyce Hemry, is Salutatorian.

Continental Grain Co. has completed its previously announced acquisition of a 51 percent majority interest in Premium Standard Farms. Key office personnel of “The New Premium Standard Farms” will relocate from Gallatin offices to offices in Princeton.

The Bulldog 4×400 meter relay team heads back to state for the first time since 1996. Team members are Quentin Carroll, Randy Eaton, Joey Hubbard and Brian Robertson.

May 25, 1988

Frances and Elmer Whitt were commended for being a part of the Gallatin business community for over 25 years this week. The Whitts operated restaurants in four locations before retiring, most recently Whitt’s Dinner Bell Café between the Bank of Gallatin and Place’s.

Larissa Pendleton was named Salutatorian and Darren Hiley is Valedictorian of the 45-member Gallatin R-5 High School Class of 1988. Only .001 point separated Todd Steward from Larissa. Kimberly McCarty and Amy Frost rounded out the top five academic rankings for this graduating class.

The Public Water Supply District No. 1 of Daviess County recently completed the construction of a new office and maintenance building located a quarter mile north of Pattonsburg on Hwy. 69. Nineteen years ago on Sept. 22, 1969, six local farmers and businessmen met at the FHS office in Gallatin. This small group represented Winston and Weatherby people interested in forming a rural water district.

May 24, 1978

Sprint isn’t just “bustin out all over” in Daviess County this year. In fact, this spring has developed into one of the worst in memory for area farmers. Excessive rainfall, about nine inches since April 1, plus below normal temperatures, has really taken a bite out of corn production.

Mr. and Mrs. Galand McGinness, Superintendent of Coffey R-1, were honored guests Friday night, May 19, at a retirement social at the Coffey School. Mr. McGinness is retiring after teaching for a total of 47 years in Iowa and Missouri. Mr. McGinness has been a superintendent for 36 of those years. Mrs. Margaret McGinness, who is retiring, has been teaching for 43 years.

Terri Hamilton and James Olney were named All-Around Athletes at the Gallatin R-5 athletic banquet last Thursday night. Terri is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Hamilton, and James is the son of Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Olney.

May 23, 1968

Thursday through Tuesday at the Courter Theater: Direct form its Roadshow Engagement. Every ticket holder is guaranteed a seat. “The Bible,” starring Stephen Boyd, Ava Gardner, Richard Harris, John Huston, Peter O’Toole, Michael Parks and George C. Scott.

A Woods Brothers crew is preparing to lay a concrete “apron” in front of the Junior Hockensmith lot at Lake Viking. The cans, obtained from salvage, will be embedded in the apron and will serve as spawning nests for future crops of bass which Junior hopes to harvest.

Carle Lee (Tom) McDaniel, well-known basketball coach at Jameson High School, has been named to receive the first annual Daviess County “Outstanding Young Educator” award by the Gallatin Jaycees. The winner of the first award is 30 years old and is a graduate of Jamesport High School and Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville.

May 22, 1958

Gallatin’s Dockery Park will be tripled in size, existing facilities improved and new improvements added, including two lakes and a shelter house, according to a park board announcement this week. Over 60 additional acres of land is being purchased from Frank Sweaney. The improvements to be made include two fishing lakes, one at the southwest corner of the new tract, the other to be built in the deep ravine northeast of the football field. One of the features of the new area will be a tournament size archery course.

Members of the Jameson R-3 High School visited Colorado’s famed Royal Gorge on their recent tour. Students were Gene Landers, Rheam Wilmot, Elizabeth Dutro, Ross Worley, Lois Prindle, Patty Burton, Larry Miller, Louise Hall, Helen Chadwick and Joe Page. Sponsor on the tour was Supt. and Mrs. L. R. Holley.

Nearly 500 spectators, including teachers and students of the R-5 District and their parents and guests, attended an impressive Masonic cornerstone laying ceremony at the new elementary building Tuesday afternoon. A sealed copper box was placed in a niche in the wall behind the cornerstone for the benefit of future generations.

May 20, 1948

Funeral services with full military honors were held Tuesday afternoon for Pvt. Darrell M. Terry, 25-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey A. Terry, northwest of Gallatin, who lost his life in the Normandy invasion. The pallbearers were Harold Bruce, Glen Gatenby, Harry Mitchell, Keith Streeter, Robert Lukehart and Charley Brown.

Gallatin High School seniors enrolled in the school’s first driving course are Emily McKiddy, Donna Pauls, Betty Wilkins, J. D. Volk, Jo Ann Struhar, Bobby Blythe, Charles Mason, Alice Blythe, Max Snider, Winona Stretch, Bill Coon, David Knauer, Melvin Carey, Donald Magathan, Bernard Wilson, Keith Alexander, Tommy McWilliams and Bill Meade. A 1948 Chevrolet was made available by Gallatin Motor Company.
