Daviess County Library expanded its digital services, enabling patrons to browse book titles on its website or use an app to read, listen or watch on all major computers and mobile devices. The library also initiated a pilot outreach program in the form of a pop-up library at Winston City Hall (May, 2017).
- Lactation Station “Friendly Worksite” Grant (July, 2017)
- Summer Under the Stars Program and Night Sky Astronomical Event (NASA and Astronomical Society of Kansas City in August, 2017)
- Solar Eclipse (informational sessions and event host in August, 2017)
- Basement remodeling project ($6,500 donation, concluded March, 2018)
- NASA Solar System Ambassador to Daviess County Schools (May, 2018)
- Bookapalooza Program (one of three libraries nationally in May, 2018)
Perhaps the most noteworthy is when the Daviess County Library was chosen as one of 75 libraries nationwide to partner with NASA and the American Libraries Association for the NASA@mylibrary initiative. Our library beat out hundreds of applicants from all 50 states and is the only library from Missouri chosen for the 3-year partnership to promote STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) skills for youth and adults. After completing Phase I in spring 2018, the county library now has the option to renew the partnership for Phase II.
These examples of expanded programs were possible by the library’s tradition of service and solid foundation while the library was under the direction of Jan Johnson. At the time Jan was appointed director in 1979, the county library’s main facility had already relocated from a Victorian 2-story residence on North Main Street in Gallatin (across from Shopko).
In December, 1995, the library relocated into its current setting on West Grand Street, with Jan helping to secure a matching federal grant of $131,500 for the $260,000 relocation project. Jan was instrumental in writing numerous grants that allowed many new programs and services before her retirement in 2016, concluding 36 years of commendable leadership in library and community service.
