Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (Nasdaq: VRTX) recently announced that Patrick McNickle of Gallatin has been awarded a $5,000 “All In for CF” scholarship to support his attendance at Truman State University. Vertex awarded 80 “All In for CF” scholarships totaling $400,000 to people living with cystic fibrosis (CF) and their immediate family members for the 2018-2019 academic year.

“If anyone ever asked me how to come to terms with the disease, the first thing I would advise them to do is research some care tactics for cystic fibrosis,” said Patrick, 18, a senior at Gallatin R-5. “Then it’d be wise to become involved with awareness organizations, helping them to advocate and see updated facts. But most of all, don’t give up hope; be optimistic about the research currently in progress. Look forward to medical advances.”
The “All in for CF” Scholarship program was established in 2017 to help people living with CF and their parents and siblings pursue two-year, four-year or graduate degrees.
Patrick’s brother Christopher, 22, has CF. Patrick and Christopher are the sons of Jeffery and Tamara McNickle of Gallatin.
Patrick is a member of the 2018-2019 class of Vertex “All In for CF” scholars and is working toward a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry.
The “All In for CF” scholarships complement other Vertex initiatives that help people with CF live active lives, improve awareness of CF, and further the study of CF. Part of Vertex’s 10-year, $500 million corporate giving commitment, the company has awarded 120 “All In for CF” Scholarships since initiating the program last year.
“From people living with cystic fibrosis returning to school following lung transplants, to brothers and sisters inspired by their sibling’s courageous fights, the determination of ‘All in for CF’ Scholarship recipients is remarkable,” said Jeffrey Leiden, M.D., Ph.D., Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Vertex. “They are examples of the many families who inspire us in our relentless pursuit to discover and develop transformative CF medicines.”
Scholarship recipients were chosen by an independent committee of CF community members
based on a submitted essay and an applicant’s demonstrated level of community involvement,
financial need, and academic achievement.
