Changes to an ordinace on open burning within city limits, which was recently passed by the City of Gallatin, has become a bit of a hot-button topic, but only because of a lot of misinformation going around, according to Gallatin Police Chief Mark Richards.

The reality is that now you get to burn more stuff. Before all you could burn was leaves and clippings and other small things. The new ordinance allows you to have fire pits and burn big brush piles.
No new restrictions were passed. All restrictions in the new ordinance were already in place under the city’s nuisance ordinance.
The city did, however, relax some of the burning restrictions to allow for outdoor fire pits/rings. You may now have an outside fire pit or fire ring that is 20 feet from any building or property line.
In addition, you are now able to get a permit to burn off grass in a large area or if you have an unusually large pile of brush to burn.
These activities were not allowed prior to this ordinance.
You can still only burn yard waste that originated on your property.
