Letter from Sally Black, Daviess County Assessor

I would like to say thank you to you, the taxpayers of Daviess County, and to my office staff. I have been in office just a little over seven months and there have been some hurdles and I’m sure there will be more. But I have received some encouraging words and notes (sent in with or on personal property sheets) from several of you, and I just want you to know that they are very much appreciated and they came when I needed to hear them. I wish I had time to stop and visit with those of you that have asked, but right now we are very busy out in the field picking up new construction and trying to get that data entered before our deadline, which is fast approaching. Maybe one day I’ll be able to come by for a visit.

The year 2018 will be the first set of valuations that I will have entered as the new assessor, because I didn’t take office until Sept. 1, 2017. The valuations for 2018 will be for personal property items and for any new construction as of Jan. 1, 2018. It will also include any items that have been removed (personal or real) before Jan. 1, 2018. We are trying to be very careful in entering the data, but we are human and can make mistakes, especially when we get interruptions while entering data. So if you think something is wrong with your valuation, please call and ask us to check it.

One other thing I’d like you, the taxpayers, to know is that we are linked to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and the system brings up everything the DMV has listed in your name, along with the purchase date. Items are to be turned in on your assessment if you owned them on Jan. 1, 2018. Some of you may get a phone call from our office inquiring about items listed in the DMV. We are only trying to help save you a headache down the road, especially when you go to the DMV to get your license.
