Virginia, the first born child of Henry and Marie (Thompson) Stratton, was born Dec. 13, 1919, in Winner, SD, as her parents homesteaded acreage there. Ten brothers and sisters later joined her family, Wayne, Paul, Lowell, M.O., Joyce, Norma, Robert, Stanley, George and Eddie.
Virginia graduated from McFall High School in 1938. It was there she met her future husband, Olen L. Salmon. They were married on Sept. 2, 1939. They were most fortunate to celebrate 76 years of marriage. Two children were born from this marriage, Gary and Linda. They spent most of their lives working and living on their farm near McFall.
Working came naturally to Virginia. Growing up during the Depression, and helping with several brothers and sisters, Virginia learned at an early age that work was not only necessary, but expected. A good work ethic followed her throughout her life. She worked as a bookkeeper for Dr. Barnes in King City; was a devoted cook at the Albany Hospital; and was a farm wife, spending hours in the kitchen and garden while raising two children.
She was a member of the First Christian Church in Gallatin. She was a very proud and faithful woman.
Virginia loved to cook and her family will always remember her homemade noodles and peanut brittle! Other pastimes she enjoyed were playing cards and gardening. Her beautiful quilts revealed her love of sewing.
Survivors are her children, Gary and Nancy Salmon and Linda Salmon, all of Gallatin; brothers, Paul Stratton, Sequim, WA, Stanley (Barbara) Stratton, St. Joseph, Robert (Frances) Stratton, Bethany, George (Sharon) Stratton, Kansas City, Eddie (Deb) Stratton, Gladstone; sister, Norma Lindsey, Bethany; grandchildren, Stephanie Cole, Will (Natalie) Salmon; great-grandchildren, Wes, Gabe, Kailey, Karley and Kallie, all of Gallatin; and several nieces and nephews.
Virginia blessed our family in many ways, and dearly loved her family. Even her great-grandchildren will remember her. She was blessed with a loving husband, family, good health and an undying faith.
