Amy Hudlemeyer will be crowned Miss URA 2008 (United Rodeo Association) on Saturday, March 22, at the Hamilton High School. Amy received the title last November, along with titles for Miss Photogenic and Horsemanship.

Rachel Hopkins of Pattonsburg has been selected to the 2008 Women’s All-American Trapshooting Team. Rachel captured the women’s title in the Parliament Coach Handicap at the Grand American, 13-day world tournament held at the World Shooting and Recreational Complex near Sparta, Ill.

Representing Gallatin High School on the 2008 All-GRC basketball honor squads were Ashley Owens, Wren Tolen, Courtney Ray and Kyle Hefley.

March 4, 1998

The old town of Pattonsburg continues getting into character for its role as 1861 Lawrence, Kansas. The town has been chosen as the site for a film from Universal, “To Live On,” directed by Ang Lee. The movie depicts the raid and burning of the town by Quantrill and his gang.

Shelly Taul and Jason Parker were crowned queen and king during GHS Winter Sports Homecoming festivities Friday night.

Jason Waters, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ron Waters and grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Waters of Odessa, Texas, recently signed a National Letter of Intent to play football at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. Jason is the great-grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. F.A. Dunnington and L.L. Waters of Gallatin and the great-nephew of Scherryl Osborn of Gallatin.

March 2, 1988

March 8 will be a significant election day in Missouri. It will mark the first time Missourians will cast ballots in a Presidential Primary. Secretary of State Roy Blunt predicts at least one-third of Missouri’s registered voters will participate in the primary. If that holds true, nearly 1,800 Daviess County voters will cast votes on March 8.

Authorities are investigating the theft of 108 fat hogs from a Daviess County farm. Joey D. Lupfer of McFall reported the theft at 1:55 p.m. Monday. The cross-bred hogs were taken from a feed lot located on Rt. T and AA.

Five Gallatin musicians were recently named to the All-Grand River Conference Band. Representing Gallatin were Michelle Williams on oboe, Larissa Pendleton on clarinet, Chuck Stoner on tenor sax, Kim McCarty on trumpet and Stacey Berry on trombone.

The Board of Directors of the Bank of Gallatin is proud to announce the employment of Roy Pendleton of Gallatin as assistant vice-president in charge of bank operations. According to Dick Focht, bank president, the choice of Roy over other applicants for this position related to his past achievements and his positive attitude toward dealing with people.

Marvin Hiley, Gallatin R-5 Industrial Arts instructor, was honored in Kirksville on Saturday at the Industrial Arts Association of Missouri Conference ’78 as Outstanding Teacher of the Year from the Northwest District.

Opposition for the Kansas City Chiefs basketball game on March 23 will be Larry Holley, former William Jewell College standout and Jameson High School all-stater; Jerry Armstrong, King City basketball coach and a 1962 Missouri all-stater who played with the 1966 Texas Western national champion; Tom McDaniel, popular Jameson basketball coach; Tom Prindle, former Jameson High School and Trenton Junior College player; Doug Roberts, Gilman City; Jerry Courter, Coffey; Bill McDaniel, Hamilton; and Jim Nalle, Pattonsburg.

Bonnie Kimberling of Jamesport has been selected to sing in the State FHA chorus which sings in Jefferson City March 9. The chorus is composed of 190 girls who will be dressed in white.

The Fred Dustman family of Jameson has been named to receive the Balanced Farming Management Award given by the University of Missouri Extension Division. The Dustmans own 779 acres in Daviess County. Major enterprises are corn, soybeans, hogs and cattle.

March 6, 1958

Bert Barnett, a resident of Cox Rest Home and formerly of Jameson, is the only living person to show championship mules in the World Fair of 1904. His coveted possessions include over 180 ribbons received during his long and active career as a mule breeder, trainer and showman.

Gene Schweizer, Gallatin R-5; Janis DeWitt, Coffey R-1; and Barry Findley, Pattonsburg R-2, are the sophomore students selected to take the pilgrimage this year to Jefferson City.

Daviess County motorists would be insulted if they were accused of encouraging car thefts that have been plaguing Sheriff Leland Houghton and other officers in the area. Actually, many drivers are making it easy for prospective thieves by leaving their car keys in the ignition. Of 340 cars parked around or near the square on Saturday, 84 had the keys in them, an open invitation to theft.

March 4, 1948

A faulty boxcar truck was believed to have caused the derailment of 11 refrigerator cars of Eastbound Rock Island No. 302, popularly known as the “doodlebug.” Wrecking crews worked in the rain last Friday to right the cars which left the rails Thursday night and piled up along the right of way.

The Gallatin High School Bulldogs pulled their giant-killing act again last night at Maryville by eliminating Christian Brothers High of St. Joseph, 31-25, in the first round of the regional basketball tournament. Big Johnny Brown paced the victory with 12 points.

The county’s new public library moved into full operation Tuesday with the delivery of first book quotas to six more drop stations. Towns included in the delivery were Jameson, Coffey, Lock Springs, Carlow, Winston and the Boyd Schoolhouse in Washington township.
