Boot Hill Shooting Ground has relocated into southern Daviess County at 33482 230th (take FF a half mile east from Highway 13).
Boot Hill is a shotgun specific shooting range that offers sporting clays and 5-stand. It is operated by Randy Pickering of Hamilton.
Sporting clays is a sport that has shooters travel a course with 10-15 stations where they will stop and try to shoot a variety of clay targets thrown from electric traps. This is a self-serve operation; shooters “pull” their own targets by use of remote controls at each station. The course is usually 100 targets, but a 50-target version is also available.
Boot Hill operated in Hamilton for many years until they determined they needed a bigger site, so they closed in 2017 and relocated to the new location.
Boot Hill offers open shooting on Saturdays and Sundays. They also have a scheduled tournament every month starting in March through September. This year Boot Hill will open on March 10-11 with a tournament.
Boot Hill is also well known for their yearly fundraising shoot called the “Black Dog” in August. With the new location, this shoot’s name will change to the “Veteran’s Shoot.”
Boot Hill is the host club for this shoot, but it is put on by the “Shoot Like a Girl” organization. The proceeds from this shoot and a couple of other events put on by “Shoot Like a Girl” are all donated to the Cameron Veteran’s Home. In 2016 they raised $25,000 and in 2017 they raised $30,000 for the home.
This is the biggest shooting event at Boot Hill. This year’s 11th annual “Shoot Like a Girl” event is scheduled for Aug. 11 and is directed by Neva Woody of Hamilton.
This year, a new fundraising shoot is being held at Boot Hill on April 14. This will be a shoot for the Missouri Conservation Department. There will be individual events as well as a team event.
Boot Hill is also the host club for the Northwest Missouri Sporting Clays League that runs from April through September.
This league is designed for beginners and experienced shooters alike. League members shoot one round of sporting clays each month. All shooters are divided into classes with shooters of like ability and shoot against each other to determine placements.
In 2016 there was over $11,000 in cash divided among eight classes with nine guns given away. In 2018 there will be 18 guns given away and likely over $15,000 in cash awarded to the class placements.
There are many sponsors of this league, with the main sponsor being CZ-USA in Kansas City, KS. They are providing two grand prize guns valued at $1,799 each to be given away by drawing of the shooters that participated for the entire league. Additionally, two guns per month will be given away by drawing of all shooters that participated that month. In 2016 they had 101 shooters. League organizers are hoping for 125 shooters in 2018.
