The Gallatin Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution hosted their President’s Tea on Feb. 14 at the First Baptist Church in Gallatin.
The chapter presented the Mary Grace Weldon Music Award, the Good Citizen Award, and the American History essay winners, at the tea.
Instrumental musicianship honors was left to the discretion of the Gallatin R-5 Instrumental Band Director Xandria Obico, who chose Jordan Donovan to receive the honor. Jordan is a seventh grade student at GHS. He is the son of Jeff and Jenny Donovan.
Mary Grace Weldon was a member of the Gallatin DAR Chapter years ago and, upon her passing, her family organized this award in honor of her great love of music and support of the musical education of area children. The recipient of the award is required to exhibit strong technical and performance skills and show a deep love of music and his or her instrument.
The Good Citizen Award is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. The program is open to all high school seniors and the student must demonstrate the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. Those winners were Dakota Boe, North Daviess R-3, grandson of Lillian Mullford, Coffey; Lilly Simons, Tri-County R-7, daughter of Jennifer and Lloyd Simons; Peyton Jones, Pattonsburg R-2, son of Brent and Heather Jones; Chandler Asher, Winston R-6, son of Robert Asher and Megan Shubert; all are juniors. Hayley Michael, Gallatin R-5 senior, not pictured, is the daughter of Doug and Angel Michael.
The American History Essay Award contest encourages students in the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades to develop an essay on an assigned historical topic. The winners were Mary Taylor, fifth grader from Gallatin Middle School, daughter of Brenda and Lonnie Taylor; Cloey Waterbury, eighth grader from Gallatin Middle School, daughter of Rachel Houser and Kevin Waterbury; and Tyler Butler, seventh grader from Pattonsburg R-2, son of Willie and Becky Butler.
The DAR is a non-profit, nonpolitical women’s service organization, founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., and is dedicated to promoting historic preservation, education, and patriotism.
