Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 7159 of Princeton hosted the District One awards ceremony and luncheon on Jan. 13 for Teacher of the Year, Patriot Pen, and Voice of Democracy winners for 2017-2018.

“The VFW Post and Auxiliaries are proud to recognize teachers and students for their achievements,” said Sherry Carder of the Gallatin VFW Auxiliary.

In the middle school category Ryan Beenken received the honor of Teacher of the Year. Mr. Beenken began teaching at Gallatin R-5 Middle School in 2012. He teaches social studies, pre-civil war American history, current events, world geography, and criminal justice. He is also an assistant varsity football coach and basketball coach. He is a member of the Gallatin Middle School Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) leadership team and leader of the Student Recognition Group.

In the elementary level Cynthia Sypkens of the Hamilton Elementary School received Teacher of the Year. Both recipients were sponsored by VFW Post 2172 and auxiliary of Gallatin. Both teachers advance to state competition.

Rebecca Richardson sponsored by VFW and Auxiliary 2172 was also honored as third place District One winner of the Voice of Democracy contest and received $150. She had the opportunity to read her essay at the ceremony. Hannah is the daughter of Joseph and Rebecca Richardson of Pattonsburg, Hannah is in the Home School program.
