Gallatin varsity basketball teams could only come away with a split in Grand River Conference games at South Harrison on Friday night. The GHS Lady Bulldogs were easy winners, 71-32, but the red and black Bulldog boys fell behind early and wound up on the wrong end of a 65-52 decision.

Gallatin’s girls scored 27 of the game’s 31 points in the second quarter to pull away from their Bulldog counterparts. Karley Salmon, Courtney Shubert, Janee Filbeck and Cora Stout combined to hit 8 of 8 field goals to kick off the quarter and Aubrey Feiden and Briar Roll chipped in baskets as part of Gallatin’s 27-point effort.

A 12-5 start in the final period stretched the GHS lead to 54-17 with just under five minutes remaining in the game.

Salmon and Megan Cox split high-scoring honors for Gallatin with 12 points each. Shubert finished with 10 points. Filbeck and Roll contributed nine and eight points, respectively.

Gallatin’s girls improved to 13-4 overall and 5-1 in the GRC East Division.

Gallatin’s boys held their own at the end of each half but South Harrison claimed a 19-11 lead off the start by ending the first period with a 9-4 scoring flourish. South Harrison led by eight points early in the third quarter but surged to a 52-36 advantage with under a minute left in the period.

A Jett Simmons two-point bucket cut the gap to 60-50 with 2:31 to play in the game. Landon Corwin hit the final bucket for Gallatin in the final moments as South Harrison closed out scoring by converting 5-of-6 tries from the free throw line.

Simmons canned 23 points to lead Gallatin. Colin Beck added 15 and six rebounds. Dylan Burns chipped in nine points for the GHS Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs fell to 6-11 on the season, 2-4 in the GRC.

Following this week’s Hamilton Tournament, Gallatin teams resume GRC play at Milan next Tuesday.
