Most often, the capitol reports written by me and other elected officials focus on what is happening at the capitol — what bills have been filed, what bills have passed, and what issues are on the front burner. But, now seems like a good time to write about the why — why a bill is good or bad, why it passes or fails, and why it was introduced in the first place.

The underlying answer to why usually goes back to our family and friends and community, and especially the next generations.

Upcoming legislation will likely include more labor reform and tort reform to encourage more growth in business, the economy, and to benefit both employers and employees. Transportation will be discussed to insure our families and businesses can freely move from place to place quickly and safely.

Tax reform will be introduced to insure that state government has enough funds to take care of the needs of its citizens without overburdening its taxpayers.

Part of the reason I write this now is the time of the year. As 2017 is drawing to a close, we are now between Thanksgiving and Christmas — two holidays where we take time to appreciate and enjoy our families and count our blessings. It is a time to reflect on our accomplishments of the past, our dreams of the future, and acknowledge how lucky we are to live where we do and when we do.

For me, this sense of purpose is especially heightened now since the weekend (Dec 16) my one and only son is getting married. Just recently, my one and only daughter got engaged and is set to be married next year.

Within a few short years, Cathie and I will not only be known as wife and husband, as mother and father, but also as grandma and grandpa.

The reason I do what I do as a state representative is not for the glamour, and certainly not for the pay. Like most other state reps, state senators, mayors, councilmen, aldermen, school board members, and other elected citizens throughout our state, the reason I do what I do is to insure our kids, grandkids, and future generations have their fair shot at living the American dream – to protect their life and liberty so they may pursue their happiness, just as our ancestors did for us.

Merry Christmas, happy New Year, and may we all be blessed in the years to come.

Until next time, Merry Christmas and best wishes of safety, health and prosperity to you and your family.
