Preparations for Cameron Regional Medical Center’s 15th Annual Health Fair are well underway; and, judging by the number of calls being received at the medical center, the special wellness event is being greatly anticipated by many area residents. As in past years, a comprehensive selection of free medical services will be offered.

The health fair, under the guise of a carnival theme, will be hosted by the CRMC Foundation and will be held Saturday, October 14, from 8:00 until 11:00 a.m.
According to Warren McElwain, CRMC board president, “The CRMC Board of Directors and the CRMC Foundation Board of Directors both feel this is one of the most important events the medical center can sponsor.” He further stated, “Over the past 14 years, many people have truly been helped by these free screenings that are offered to the public on an annual basis.”
Health fair participants should take note that the traffic flow for this year’s event will again start in the orthopedic & rehab center. Attendees may park at the south end of the CRMC campus, but should note there is construction activity in this area. Participants are urged to proceed with caution, as there is a section of one-way traffic involved.
Registration will take place in the waiting room of the orthopedic & rehab center, and lab testing will take place in the adjacent physical therapy department.
“As part of the medical center’s community benefit efforts, we will once again be offering extensive testing and services intended to improve the well-being of area residents,” indicated Joseph F. Abrutz, Jr., CRMC administrator. “We truly hope people will come out and take advantage of these free services.”
During the course of Saturday morning, various tests, medical screenings, and counseling services will be provided to the public at no charge. A broad panel of lab tests will include anemia, blood sugar, thyroid, cholesterol panel, iron, GFR, and BUN/creatinine. Participants are encouraged to fast after midnight to facilitate accurate lab results. A kidney function screening for urine protein will also be available, as will glucose testing and diabetes education.
Several physicians will be participating in this year’s event: Joel Waxman, M.D., ear, nose & throat (ENT), will provide oral cavity cancer screenings; Nancy Gasparovic, D.P.M., will once again be providing podiatry screenings; and education on women’s health will be available from Daut Gjoni, M.D., obstetrician/gynecologist. In addition, Dawn Estes, family nurse practitioner, will provide education on the pneumonia vaccine and shingles.
“The CRMC medical staff highly encourages area residents to attend the health fair,” indicated Fred Kiehl, D.O., CRMC chief of staff. “This represents an inexpensive and convenient opportunity to receive education on various topics, find out if there is an issue requiring further medical attention, and/or to monitor an existing condition.”
Always one of the more popular stations, abdominal aortic aneurysm screenings will once again be available in radiology. CRMC’s physical therapy department will conduct balance testing, which is made possible by a new equipment system donated by the CRMC foundation.
Flu vaccinations will be available to those over 18 years of age, with third-party payors being billed. Self-pay patients can receive the flu vaccine for a minimal charge of $25.00; however, all other testing services are being provided at no cost to the public.
Numerous door prizes will be given away during the event, and a total of eight drawings will be held for free bone densitometry studies (3), carotid studies (3), and calcium scorings (2). Refreshments will be served in the private dining room.
